New Places Bathrooms

Spa-cious Living. We found these images beautiful and calming, if not a little ridiculous. New Places is a collaboration among European furniture and fixtures manufacturers E15, Dornbracht and Alape. Check out pics after the jump...

The goal of New Places was to break down the boundaries of traditional bathooms and integrate the functionality into living space. (We told you it was a bit ridiculous.) While these images are high-on-style and low on actual bathroom functionality, we love the cylindrical pedestal sinks and the squared/flat faucets.

Please try to be more open minded. To my thinking, at least, this is far from "ridiculous". I find it to be quite beautiful and refreshing. Very soothing.

From the "ridiculous," I was expecting to see toilets clustered as dining room seating.

I think it's a bit ridiculous, myself. For one thing, this bathroom appears to be as large as my entire apartment. For another, it looks like you have to wash your hands at the pedestal sink (BYOS) and then walk across the room to wherever that leaning ladder is to dry them on the room's sole hand towel. C'mon.

There is a fine line between what minimalism/"serenity" and overly self-indulgent design. I believe this crosses the threshold of that.

That fourth picture with the red column and the lone sink is about the most unfriendly clean sink I've ever seen. I don't know what it is but as stupid as this sounds, I would not feel comfortable washing my hands in that place.

What's so calming about washing your face in a soup bowl?

Why, the scrubbing properties of all those little alphabet letters, of course!

Nice screen name, by the way.

Helll-lloo, it's a CATALOG basically...

What's so ridiculous about showing gorgeous sculptural pieces like this? Nuttin'.

See, I guess another case for hiring a designer, since a designer can visualize past the panic these pictures seem to inspire in some...

I think there is soooo much inpsiration here... the geometric and the organic.. how much a little (bright color) goes a long way... slick and rough... white as an intentional color choice...

So, okay, no cute kitty in the pics. But don't throw the Dornbracht out with the bath water.

Besides, the sort of people who can afford bath furniture like this often have bathrooms of that size.

I really love these wooden pieces. I've always thought that there is something calming about wood in the bathroom. Combined with the vessels and hardware it seems so pleasantly balanced.

The almost dream-like surroundings that designs like this get placed in for catalogs are interesting too. They make me think of serenity, comfort and calmness (is that a word?). They are also placed like art in a gallery where all of the focus is on the piece. This is definately what a bathroom would look like in my dreams.

The Duravit catalog has a tendency to be very fantasy like as well.
