Alright, so it's not been cold this winter. Doesn't mean we're not ready. As we were flipping the mattress last week, it occurred to us that we have accumulated a hell of a lot of layers of bedding - all of which combine to make our bed super comfortable. Nevertheless, the amount of stuff we have on it, especially in the winter, is outrageous. We thought we'd give it a dissection. After you read ours, tell us yours.
- Full Sized Sealy Posturpedic Mattress (12 years old): 1800mattress
- Mattress Cover (keeps out dustmites, etc.): Bed, Bath & Beyond

My isn't as multi layered as yours, Maxwell, but here it goes --
- boxspring/mattress - 5.5 yrs. old
- foam "egg carton" mattress cover
- quilted mattress cover (package said it keeps dustmites out)
- fitted and flat sheets
- cotton quilt
- down duvet and cover
- pillows: 2 euros, 4 standards, 1 king, oops, another standard, 3 decorative
- silk lap throw tossed at the foot of the bed
- 3 cats
Wow, it's a linen lasagna!
I'm guessing the sheets are extra-deep to accomodate the two pads and feather bed?
Maxwell, if you have a featherbed, why do you have a mattress pad? Do you take the featherbed off when it's really warm?
As for me:
Tailored bedskirt, new this year; yay, no more ruffles!
Split-queen box springs and "cushion firm" matress, with down-top featherbed, also new this year
All-cotton sheets
Brand-new cotton blanket from Macy's. Very good looking.
Down comforter (yard sale, $2.00 plus dry cleaning)
Comforter cover
Six queen pillows (two not slept with), body pillow, airplane pillow
Patchwork quilt and shams
Two cats - one at head, one at foot.
Oh yeah - I forgot about my bedskirt!
- 1 year-old queen pillowtop Serta mattress and box spring (flipped twice already - it is the best bed I've ever had)
- 400 TC mattress pad cover (maybe mite-resistant; who knows? but v. thick)
- white 600 TC cotton sateen sheets (pure bliss; $39.99 at Marshall's/TJ Maxx)
- 2 cheap pillows just for propping up on with white 600 TC cases from the set
- 1 very thin but pliable down pillow that I took from my dorm room when I left school in Italy in 1991. I think it is down *powder* inside now, but I am still oddly attached to the pillow that saw me through homesickness. Light green Marimekko scribble-design pillowcase. Downproof zippered cover.
- 1 thin but relatively new down pillow; it's the one I sleep on. Light green Marimekko scribble-design pillowcase. Downproof zippered cover.
- 1 white, heavy matelasse blanket.
- 1 quilt, a year old. Reversible. One side solid white with bright-colored pick-stitched edges, the other side white with bright colored blocks.
- 1 protective dog blanket, reversible charcoal grey and lime-green polarfleece.
- 1 down-blanket throw; used only when it's truly cold. With it, I can shut my heat back to 60 and still sleep wicked cozy. It's a black watch plaid, though, and goes with NOTHING I own but is beloved for its utility.
- 1 non-pleated, non-ruffled dust ruffle. White, with a subtle grid design outlined in white stitching. It covers my basic metal bed frame.
You know, it being Bedroom Month and NO CONTEST, I may send in pics of my bedroom. I do love how uncluttered it feels; I wish I spent more time in it!
hmm, I am rather scant compared to you all:
- 1 full-size sealy posteurpedic mattress (5 years old)
- fitted and flat sheets, all cotton, around 350/400 tc (overstock.com!)
- heavy box stitched down comforter (5 years old and going strong - ikea)
- custom duvet, tailored bedskirt, euro and standard pillow shams (thanks mom!)
- 2 euro pillows, 4 standard pillows (2 are used for decorative purposes only in the tailored shams)
I'm considering a memory foam pillow, the down and synthetic pillows seem to go flat so quickly.
Has anyone tried a memory foam pillow before? or does anyone have a good tip on how to keep pillows fluffier longer?
6 year old pillow-top mattress. Then a 3" memory foam mattress pad from Overstock. Then a mattress pad cover. Then the 600 tc Hotel sheets from BB&B that someone recommended (in chocolate). Then a flannel sheet blanket, a vintage quilted satin bedspread from ebay and a down comforter that is usually folded at the foor of the bed. I kind of have to launch myself up onto it--it was the memory foam that sent it over the top, but I would never take it off now. It is tooo nice. Ohh--and 3 pillows--2 feather down, one faux down in ultrasuede.
Yeah, I'm curious about the mattress pad + feather bed as well. I suppose the electric mattress pad and feather bed come off after winter, and leaving the other mattress pad on was just... habit?
- queen sized spring mattress
- mattress cover (for dustmites)
- Sunbeam electric matress pad (like heaven)
- Pure Beech sheets from BB&B
- Down Comforter from Pacific Coast (over 5 years old and still going strong)
- Duvet Cover from Ikea
- Tempurpedic pillow
- 2 standard sized down pillows from Ikea in the shams that match the comforter cover
- 2 small bolster pillows from West Elm in covers
- 1 large bolster pillow from West Elm that lives off the bed unless needed.
When sleeping, the 2 standard sized pillows go away and only the Tempurpedic is used. The down pillows are for bed-mates and reading.
The small and large bolster pillows have been a very welcome addition to my bed. They are very firm and dense so hold up well to being leaned on while sitting up, or leaned over for reading on your belly, or for keeping between your pillow and the headboard during sleep to ensure that the pillow you are sleeping with doesn't slide back uncomfortably into the headboard. Very good buys indeed.
feather beds are the best. i love hopping into bed on a cold night between a feather bed and a down comforter. it's a wonderful winter nest.
Queen-size bed
wood slats
bed board
mattress (so old I'm embarassed)
cotton mattress pad
fitted sheet
bedskirt
feather bed
feather bed cover
down duvet w/linen cover
four standard down pillows each covered by a king-size pillow cases
two standard pillows w/ linen shams
two European pillows covred w/ silk shams
4 decorative pillows
1 cotton throw
1 teddy bear, 1 stuffed dog, 1 rag doll
I have a lot of stuff for my bed which, for various reasons, isn't on it. This includes a down-pillowtop featherbed, the duvet covers I've been too lazy to use this winter, and a sculpted memory-foam pillow I only use occasionally. When I'm using the featherbed, I cover it with its own sheet.
- I have a futon and find this difficult to defend: mostly I just like the really-low-to-the-ground bed. It came from an upscale futon store & isn't the typical collegiate crap. I'm going to be using a different mattress on it shortly, as we have a queen mattress available and the futon mattress is old enough that it's gotten kind of hard.
- mattress pad
- 400tc sateen sheets with a woven windowpane pattern, from overstock.com
- Pacific Coast duvet. Well-stuffed and stitched for non-shifting. My previous $99 Ralph Lauren duvet was great at first, but it was basic, and the down shifted to the edges after one winter and never shifted back no matter how much it was washed or fluffed or shaken (note: not much washing because that's not great for down). This one was around $350 and totally worth it.
- 7 pillows. Two basic $10 models - they're really comfortable! A Woolrich down pillow. On my fiance's side of the bed is a horrible Martex faux-down pillow that I got in 2000 at Target and that clumps like crazy, as well as a Woolrich Down-Around pillow (a layer of down around a feather core). Finally, two "body pillows" that I use as bolsters: they perfectly fit across a queen-size bed.
I also have heavyweight flannel sheets in a heathered dark greyish-blue, but I am not using them right now, with the exception of the pillowcases. Some duvet covers include a heavy navy blue twill, a cheap but cute white one with a bright retro cat pattern from Delia's (they have since improved the quality of their bedding, but this one was like $30 and is adorable), another white one with some kind of retro-modern-asian pop-floral pattern from PB Teen (has matching shams), a borrowed blue flannel thing with snowflakes that I only have because it matches my flannel sheets and my mom wasn't using it, and finally a relatively expensive but completely poorly made Grand Patrician "sateen" high-tc cover that is actually only sateen and high-tc on one side, and practically canvas on the other, and has had to have so many of its seams mended and buttons replaced after only marginal amounts of use. Sheet sets are all high-tc and from various places... overstock.com, Target ("Swell Stripe"), Sam's Club (really soft 270-tc sateen by Cannon... Canon? Royal Velvet?), etc.
What I'm scoping right now is the cinnamon-colored Fieldcrest Luxury set at Target. It's going on the wedding registry if it's still around in six months. I especially like the silk-satin quilt. And I'm really hoping that we get an electric mattress pad! Obviously, the composition of my bed will change after my fiance and I move in together. He likes more 70s-inspired stuff, and I really don't, but there will be some kind of neutral ground, even though I am the one who has put thought and money into the bedding. (He sleeps on itchy black 180-thread 50/50 percale with pillows that must be at least a decade old. Meh.)
I forgot my bedrest -- my "husband." Because of the pipe chase, I can't get my bed up against the wall to keep the pillows on, and there's no room for a headboard. At least not much.
The new bed is huge compared with the old (tho' both are queens) -- it's like a parade float in my little pad. So I'm treating it in "landscape" rather than portrait -- pillows at the side, not the head with the hunter green (what can I say...) body pillow at the free side of the bed. This helps a lot, makes it recede back a bit more. I'm not sure how a headboard could work with this look.
Wow. those are a lot of BLT Sized beds. As for our mattress cover AND feather bed, the mattress pad is just a habit and the feather bed does come off in the summer (when we remember!).
Oh, I almost missed this thread! And I LOVE my/our bed!
King size Hastens mattress-all natural materials, horse hair, cotton, flax, wool and solid pine - get it at abc carpet
down pillows - 4 total
crazy hi count amazing sheets/duvet via gracious home bi annual sale (thanks at). they're very thin. i like thin hi count sheets the best, all the better to feel the down comforter
12 count (european measure) down comforters (one for the husband, one for me-the only way to go!)
We can barely get out of bed on the weekends and always make loud, sighing, noises as we get into bed every night.
The link to my name is the down company in Denmark
Oh, yes, Jean reminds me about the body pillows - they get wrapped in sheets when they're used as bolsters. I don't use the topsheet from the set on my bed because of duvet covers, so the usual thing is to just wrap the sheet around the body pillows and tuck it carefully. It's all under the rest of the pillows anyway.

Has anyone seen a product that fits between the mattress and box spring that you can pull out when you go to bed to store the duvet or bedspread on in the middle of the night when you get too hot? I don't have room for a bench or regular upright blanket holder at the foot of the bed, and I want to keep it handy and off the floor but be able to tuck the device out of the way during the day. I vaguely remember seeing something in a catalog once and saying, oh, how clever, and now I can't find it anywhere.
How exactly do you use a featherbed in combination with sheets. Does the featherbed go on top of a bottom fitted sheet? Do you use a top sheet between the top of the featherbed and the bottom of the down comforter? Sorry to be so naive.
yes, please advise...does the featherbed go under the fitted sheets...
The featherbed does indeed go under the fitted sheet.
I'd also LOVE to find the bedspread holder that goes between the mattress and the box springs. I saw one 20 years ago at a friends house and now want one. It was very neat and during the daytime, it just slid inbetween the mattresses and out of sight.
