Moroccan Wedding Blankets Sourceand Peek Into a Marrakech Office

We've been enchanted by Moroccan Wedding blankets for a little while now but short of a plane ticket East, we haven't been sure how to lay our hands on one. We've uncovered the go-to-gal for Moroccan Wedding blankets. Now we have a huge problem, not only do we want one of her blankets, but we also want to move into her office!

Maryam's Marrakech office

When searching for an online source for Moroccan wedding blankets, we kept coming across Maryam's name. We found trails of her satisfied customers all over the web. She certainly knows her stuff. Maryam handpicks each of her vintage blankets. (which usually range from between $300 to $500). You can see the range of Maryam's blankets (and other Moroccan items) on her Flickr site.

Here's a little about the blankets in Maryam's own words:
They are Berber in origin and were/are woven by women weavers. Each sequin painstakingly sewn on by hand. A single blanket can take many months to produce, depending on the complexity of design and the number of sequins. The loom in Morocco is treated as a living thing and treated with extreme care. If the weaver takes care in the weaving process, then the textile she produces is believed to have talismanic power and to protect the user from the evil eye.

When she's not assisting her architect husband on the construction of their tiny boutique hotel in a Marrakech olive grove (isn't that the definition of fabulous?), Maryam is also hard at work on an Moroccan interior design book. Somehow she also finds time to take the amazing photographs that illustrate her blog, My Marrakesh. She's also works as human rights and democracy specialist. On top of all that, she has a husband and 2 children, a dog and 3 cats! Whew!

ashbadger, the first image is from LivingEtc (not Maryam's office). They credit the seascape photo as being from In-stillLife. I hope that helps...

Wonderful. Something a cat owner like me needs to admire from a distance, though! (My bedding has to be washable and pretty much indestructable or else replacable.)

Moroccan wedding blankets and shawls have a fascinating history, and if you go deep into the Atlas Mountains and talk to Berber women you'll find each has her own - her own size! Which make each one unique and so wonderful.

i have been slightly obsessed with these blankets - and kick myself over and over again for not buying when i was in marrakesh last year. maryam has gorgeous ones, she's an expert in finding them. but with shipping costs from morocco to the states, price gets crazy high. i just found some in the u.s., on lavivahome.com. love 'em love 'em love 'em!
