NY Good Questions: Colorful Bedding for our Neutral Room?

1.11bed.jpgHello AT,

We finally took the plunge and got a king-size bed.

Our new bed (the Ella Bed in micro-suede from Room & Board - pictured) and rug (cotton flat weave by Madeline Weinrib - also pictured) are very neutral, as is the rest of our apartment.

What bedding would look best with these that will also bring a little bit of color to the room?...

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

The bed has modern, clean lines so I'm leaning away from a big puffy duvet and toward something that can be tucked in, but I could be convinced. Any ideas?

Thanks! BP

Define a little bit of color. The possibilities for colorful bedding are huge. What part of the spectrum are you confortable with: saturated, bright, muted, dark, pastel?

I'm going to confess that I'm a bedding slut and use all types of different looks on my King size bed and on my daughers full size bed. Especially since you have this lovely neutral palette work with.

Coverlet Matelasse would look beautiful with this headboard; any color can be intorduced and look beautiful. They are well priced at the Company Store or the new Martha Stewart at Macys' has some great pale colors. I think owning more then one is a good investment so you can change the mood of the room with color. Or you can fold one on the bottom of the bed, or use a colorful textured wool throw folded on the bottom of the bed with a netural coverlet.

I don't like a set color or bedding. I love duvet covers and change the covers weekly and sheets weekly. I have pale colors and deep jewel tone and dark grey solid flannel made in Germany for coldest winter days.

Shop the sales for bedding. I think a wardrobe of bedding looks is fun and inexpensive.

"a wardrobe of bedding looks"

dewi, you rock. that's exactly what I've been on about the past few years, but lacking the elegant phrasing.

A solid colored quilt/bedspread paired with patterned sheets would look nice.

I had a long 6 years of using plain white sheets (dorm and a few years post college). In the last 2 years I've gone color/pattern crazy.
Try Marshalls/TJ Maxx, they have a lot of deals in colors/patterns, especially in king size. I just bought a pale blue with white polka dots 300 thread count full size set for $22.
The Company Store (reversible quilts) and Garnett Hill (pink dragonflies) both have bedding sales/clearances going on right now.

I'm with dewl and Lady J, don't limit yourself. Get a few different colors to suit your mood. You might like Area bedding, they have a pretty subdued, natural palette.

Are you happy with this bed? I am looking at this as well as the Tate Bed from Crate and Barrel, and the Elliot Bed from Pottery Barn.

Is it comfortable- does it squeak? How sturday is it?

Thanks!!
