NY Good Questions: Similar, Less Expensive Bedding?

6.20bed.jpgDear AT,

I am completely in love with this set up from the Amenity website - both the bedding (cove - cream & moss) and the bed frame (muir) are absolutely gorgeous.

Alas, the bedding is somewhat out of my league, $$-wise, and the bed frame is completely out of the question.

Does anyone know of any reasonably priced facsimiles?

Or even advice about similar fabric, so that I could sew myself a duvet...

I also really like the trend of plant-inspired wall art/decals and was wondering if anyone had any brilliant DIY ideas for creating the same effect.

Thanks! Liza

Liza: I suppose you could do the DIY route, e.g., buy a plain duvet cover, and use fabric paint to create a similar design. I have a friend who did something like this, but, then again, she's also an incredibly talented painter and sells her painted bedding at local craft shows, etc.

Alternatively, you could do something similar to what I did. I bought a plain white duvet cover, and placed a throw and pillow with a graphic design from unisonhome.com on top. It was less expensive than buying a printed duvet cover from unison.

I didn't see any graphic throws on the amenity website. However, I did see some graphic throw pillows. Perhaps you purchase a plain white duvet and toss a graphic amenity pillow on the bed, along with a complementing (albeit non-graphic print) amenity (or other brand name) throw on the bed for a similar, but less expensive, look.

I know I probably didn't come close to answering your question but thought I would throw this idea out.

You should check out the crate and barrel bed linens, they have a couple of Marimekko fabrics that are similar to what you are looking for - although on a slightly smaller scale. Most of them are more single color tone, but you could always add a quilt to add another color and texture to the bed.

I can't really tell particulars of the bed frame, but there are tons of platform beds out there. It kind of looks like there is something special with the headboard there, though.

I fell in love with the pattern too, when I first saw it.

how about making one out of Marimekko Lumimarja:

Tuuli:

and Bottna just for the heck of it:

Good luck!

I was actually surprised to see that Macy's brand Style&co. has some nice Marimekko inspired duvets, like this one
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=315100&CategoryID=28892&LinkType=EverGreen&bcsi_scan_EAC41357C45D053C=zGqKQn5B7cTkY2oNJS/ lAUAAAAAvPoH&bcsi_scan_filename=index.ognc
and they're ON SALE now.

Also Dwell studio for target has this one
http://www.target.com/DwellStudio-Target-Duvet-Set-Leaves/dp/B000WXYISA/qid=1213985113/ref=br_1_7/601-6481026-4582548?ie=UTF8&node=1101048&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1&bcsi_scan_EAC41357C45D053C=ErDycIZX5ecin1pPeu4QWAUAAAAIMfwH

It's not quite what you're looking for, but I like David's idea of the throw blanket too.

My sister just bought this comforter from West Elm that looks fairly similar (more moss, though, and less cream). She loves it.

These ideas aren't exactly in line with your question but hopefully they will help a bit. I downloaded the pictures off the website and then printed them off large scale. I actually cut out one of the floral graphics and put it on a mirror from goodwill, turned out great. Then I took the pictures and photoshoped them to be the exact colors in my house and printed them out on a large scale color printer (think kinkos) then put them on $3 canvas' from IKEA. I just stapled it on , so the back looks crappy but it looks great on the wall.

Anyhow, just some cheap ideas to get the art portion. . .

If you choose to DIY: I had something in my mind that I thought would look very similar. Of course, when I actually looked it up I realized it was pretty far off. Anyways, it's worth mentioning...

http://www.finnstyle.com/makafa.html

In person I do recall the colors being less vibrant. The image itself is very large (8 feet) and would work well for a bed without it repeating. If you go the DIY route, then center the panel of fabric in the middle and sew another panel to each side. This should make a piece wide enough to make a comforter/coverlet from. That way you can put the best portion of the image on display in the center of your bed.

I forgot to mention that in order to make a coverlet with any Marimekko fabric affordable you'll need to find the fabric discounted online or at a Crate and Barrel outlet (where they reduce the cost by a LOT).

First, it helps to know where the Amenity site is, LOL, so here it is (www.amenity.com does NOT work):
http://www.amenityhome.com/e-store/home.asp

And to know what the prices are so we don't end up picking out something that costs even MORE than what is shown in the image.

Muir bed:
Queen: $1,870.00
King: $1,980.00
Cal King: $1,980.00

Duvet cover:
Queen size: $330
King size: $395

Stretched prints 24" x 24" (each):
price: $150

======

What we don't know is what size you need. And that can make a difference, because of some items at various places being on clearance and only having certain sizes left.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond, clearance, duvet set, full/queen, $69.99:
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=114723&RN=27&

This one is out of stock, and I don't know if it will be replenished or if it is in stores, king duvet was $119.99:
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=109871&RN=27

======

We can scamper over to IKEA and grab a TYGLOSA frame (about 20" x 20") for $4.99 and staple on our own fabric!:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70126044

Or, snag the CLIPS frame and use gift wrap, no, really:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/28046800

There are rolls and there are sheets of gift wrap, and sizes vary depending on each manufacturer, but this is just to get an idea:
http://www.katespaperie.com/store/productView450-E0000911.php
http://www.katespaperie.com/store/productView450-E0000774.php
http://www.katespaperie.com/store/productView450-E0001159.php

======

Taking a look at that Muir bed
http://www.2modern.com/designer/Amenity/Amenity-Muir-Bed
, or this one:
http://www.brucemarsh.com/designs/product.php?productid=16133

I'm only seeing a few parts of finished wood, with a regular slatted bed base. You can get the slats cheap at IKEA.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/range/10376/10635/

And I'm thinking (not sure) that these legs go on those slats above:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/range/10376/10637/

I know darn well you can get nice wood that could be used as a headboard and some pieces that could be attached to the side of the base (somehow) for a lot less than a thousand dollars. Sheesh.

Four Sultan metal legs, $15.00
One of those bed bases, under $200.00
Wood, from wood store, LOL, $100.00 maybe?
You finish it with stain or a clear coat. Maybe $20.00 in supplies?

======

This means you can have a bed base with wood, a duvet cover and stuff for the walls for less than the Amenity duvet costs by itself.

You could probably get a high school kid to help with attaching wood to the base, someone who's taken woodshop. And the wood doesn't have to be as wide as it shows for the beds, you just want it to stick out enough to bang your shins and provide that over-sized bed look.

For the headboard, you could also do wood flooring, you'd need about 21 sq ft for a California King...

Browse flooring here:
http://www.duro-design.com/

I love all their colors of bamboo!

You could have a lot of fun creating a headboard out of various random wood flooring too, like the Natural shown here:
http://www.dryadsdancing.com/products/product_info.php?products_id=180

Or here:
http://www.shopbluehouse.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2022

That last one was featured on AT here:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/eclectic/environment-furniture-025438

WAIT! I just had an idea! How about using wood counter tops?
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10057760

They have it in many sizes. That could be attached to this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50021627

Well, anyway, there ARE a bunch of things you can think about, try, consider. Because I have GOT to be missing something when a plain pine bed costs $2,000.00. Knotty pine that people often suggest painting over, if it's on the walls on this site. But if it's on a bed, it's suddenly desirable? Not in my book.

Check the prices on reclaimed Douglas Fir paneling here:

hi...
This idea may be cost effective but requires a little patience... :)
Buy transfer sheets for fabric... you could scan parts of your sheet design and then print onto transfer sheet... and then iron design onto ... either a nice white cotton sheet or off-white sheet... for the pictures on the wall or other stuff... you could scan design onto photo paper to the size you would like or fabric as stated for duvet cover above... and frame it ! hope this helps... I've wanted an Amenity duvet FOREVER.

The best way I could think to do it was silkscreen. I never got the chance to when I was in college and had access to a silkscreen lab, and silkscreens big enough to do it properly.

Is there an art school neaby you? Maybe you could post on craiglist or something, asking a local art student if they could silkscreen something similar for you on fabric, and then you could sew the duvet yourself.

It might take some more time and effort than buying something, but it would probably be worth it in the end.

I found this bedding set which has green leaves and a taupe foundation in a contemporary pattern.

The duvet cover is almost reasonable at $125 for full/queen and $143 for king. All of the prices are slightly on sale.
