Vera Wang Home Collection at Kohl's

09.11.wang.jpg

Adorn your home with the designer who adorns brides with such style. This pillow is from Vera Wang's new home collection at Kohl's. She joins the ranks of many couture designers to release collections at discount stores in recent years.

Her home collection is accompanied by appearal and it's all new this fall at Kohl's. We liked some of the bedding and thought this pillow was so soft and feminine. It sells at Kohl's for $50.

Kohl's is a really good department store. I like it cause it's smaller than the major chains, but it still has good quality collections. Daisy Fuentes home is mature but really fun too, especially for girly girls (or guys).

I know some will sniff at designer couture being sold at Kohl's, but isn't that the premise of modernism at it's heart? Corbu, Mies, Eames, etc. said they wanted to design for the masses but now their stuff is only sold in stuffy shops for thousands of dollars. I applaud the idea of designers like Wang and Michael Graves making good design available to the masses.

Not to nitpick (OK, totally to nitpick, but hopefully not to be too annoying), but Vera Wang is not considered to be "couture". High-end, yes, but not couture.

That said, I am excited to see her line for Kohl's! I've seen lots of pictures of the clothes (which look beautiful), but this is the first I've seen of the housewares.

Be really careful about what you buy. I bought martha stewart pillowcases from sears and didn't pay enought attention to the fabric. They are all full of pills and terrible. Double check the quality and kind of fabric before purchase!

(and factor that against the price you are paying)

As lovely as it all may be, unless Kohl's has suddenly gone way upscale, I think the line is going to bomb. The pricepoint is higher than the equivalent product at Target (by about 25%) and only marginally lower than the designer lines carried at Macy's and Bloomingdales. Shoppers at the mid and lower end department stores are extremely price sensitive. The $50 pillowcase may have Kohl's shoppers laughing, dreaming, or running from the store, but I doubt it will get them buying.

Or maybe the plan is to pull an Apple and drop the prices once the diehard Vera Wang fans have snapped up their coverlets and pillows...

Richard, you may be surprised. The line is selling out despite the pricepoint. People fail to realize that this line has brought in people other than the "Average" Kohl's shopper. It has brought in a higher scale of shopper and while the "Average" Kohl's shopper might not be willing to pay the price the new shoppers are.
