Best Modern Bedding 2009

1-14-bedding.jpg

It's January here at AT, which means we're supporting fresh starts and focusing on revamping your bedroom. The most important room in your home, this is a great month to declutter and make any upgrades because A. it's cold outside and B. sheets and bedding are on huge sale this year across the country, so the SUPER expensive stuff, Italian sheets, etc, are now within reach...

As far as trends, what I'm seeing this year is that people's fascination with the chic, more formal Hotel Bedroom is fading, and a much more homey, colorful and playful look is feeling much more appropriate for now. Perhaps this is the bedroom equivalent of comfort food?

Those Holly Hobbie butterflies are barf!

KTG - that's ok, i will keep all the Missoni bedding for myself! (though admittedly, the Misssoni Butterflies are NOT my favorite, either)

K T G--

No surprise there... the sheets are colorful, fun, and cheerful, so no doubt you'd turn up your nose.

I think in the right setting those butterflies are just dandy.

I think I've asked before, but when do we get to see your home?

I love the deep color of the Jonathan Adler spread!

Good God, neither KTG nor anyone else has to like everything that is posted on this site! If he/she thinks the butterflies are ugly, so what? It's one thing to be harshly critical of a person's home...but we are just talking about a fabric pattern from a high-end designer here. No one is getting their feelings hurt.

The butterfly duvet COVER alone is over $400. I hate it too.
I can't imagine anyone besides a 10-year-old girl wanting it in their bedroom.

Madsarah--

Yes, *everyone* is entitled to an opinion (about the items posted, and the comments of fellow posters, as you already demonstrated).

I am just not a fan of opinions that use words like "barf." And, come to think of it, "hate" when it comes to something so innocuous as a bedspread. Also, posters who do nothing but find fault and flaws just get old, in a place I come to be amused and entertained and taken away form the dreary and depressing.

And guess what? "10-year-old-girl's room would be one of the aforementioned "in the right places."

K T G-- Spare me the "honey." Only my sweetie calls me that.

To be fair, patrick, I don't hate everything, and I'm usually more articulate than some other posters about exactly what I like or don't like about something that's presented to us. That bedspread just didn't need that many words. I think inflicting it on a 10-year-old girl would warp her, and not in the good way. Does it help?

Well, Patrick, if you and your "sweetie" have hundreds of dollars to spend on Missoni bedding for your fifth-grade daughter, knock yourselves out!

You may not like other people's choice of words, but I find your tone just as offensive, if not more. Your attack on KTG is far more personal and snarky than anyone's comments about a stupid duvet cover.

And for the record, KTG does generally post well-supported opinions about items on this site. Maybe the Missoni butterflies just didn't deserve one.

Simmer down, sarah, I'd hardly quantify my opening remark to K T G as an attack.

And me and my sweetie are Gay men, so our ability to HAVE a daughter are already fairly compromised. But I'll keep ya posted on bedspread choices once we sort out the politics. Hey, do you have an egg to donate?

And I have refrained for a verrrrryyyyy long time about K T G's relentless piss-on-the-parade tone. Today I just didn't feel like holding back. So sue me.

Make that "*is* already compromised"

You guys crack me up.

Not.

(Well, patrick's last comment does...)

But I think the butterflies are whimsical and fun, and I'm not 10 any longer. (I probably wouldn't choose the butterflies for my own room because I like plain colors and a higher degree of elegance. Still, just based on looks and not price, I can see them in a bright colorful room -- why not?)

Those gray Matteo sheets, though -- too dreary. I don't care how lulxurious they may be, they (to use an expression as elderly as myself) "bum me out".

Hey -- maybe the butterfly duvet WITH the Matteo sheets, what do you think?! ;^)

Um, cute polka-dotted butterflies, in a color scheme that could launch a thousand bedrooms... yes, I see the warp-factor potential.

Yeah, let's stick to Barbie sheets and grow up our girls right!!!

:P

Yeah, a thousand treacly bedrooms. Look, let's not quarrel! You don't have to like this bedspread just to spite me.

Spiting you is just the bonus. :)

LOL, I think the Matteo sheets are gorgeous. I don't find them spartan or dreary at all, I think they're rich and subtle and cozy. But then, I tend to favor monochromatic, textured decor and gray in particular.

I like the Missoni! It's just the sort of brightly-coloured sort-of-vintage-y design I enjoy.

KTG, no doubt you'd hate the similarly bright and colourful retro flowers in my bedding. Oh well. They make me smile, and more for me!

I like the butterflies for my 2-year-old daughter, if I was wealthier. Finding items for girls that aren't pink and/or branded is rather difficult sometimes.

The Missoni bedding is beautiful! My apartment bedroom is spacious but dull! I need to color it up and this bedding would be perfect.

Thank you for this round-up article, which is quite timely for us during our renovation!

Jon_B, I've been recently looking at bedding; here are a few of the lines for children that I really love:
http://www.boodalee.com/
http://www.kukunest.com/
http://dwellshop.com/ (see kids section)

We did our kids' rooms based on collections we already had. We built our son's room around our robot collection and added space stuff as well. Pottery Barn, Garnet Hill and Land of Nod have worked well for us in that regard. Our daughter's room is full of Chinese folk art with children and animals. We recently acquired the Lantern Festival from Kukunest for her room.

The notion of working with things we already had was driven economically but really has been great since their infancy. We simply didn't want to buy baby themed items and then have to redo the rooms.
