Luxe for Less: Inexpensive Alternatives

theapartmentbedroom.jpg

We first saw this bedroom, designed by the owners of New York-based creative agency, The Apartment, for their son in a Cookie Magazine house tour. That wallpaper by UK-based Timorous Beasties makes a memorable impact and really defines the room. With some large pillows placed against the wall, we envision this space functioning as a living room. In the latest issue of LMNOP (a free, online child-centric magazine), we were pleased to discover that Jennifer Ward deconstructed this room and found less-expensive alternatives to the designer originals...

That original wallpaper from Timorous Beasties just a little pricey at £230 per roll. (with today's exchange rate that's $320!) Luckily damask wallpaper isn't too difficult to track down. Jennifer found a toned down version from usawallpaper.com for the bargain price of $15.39! Our version (above), from Lowes, is a little more expensive at $64.46, but packs a big punch.

The original bed was two mattresses are pushed together on an extra-long frame by Belgian designer Casimir. For the same effect, Jennifer suggests purchasing two IKEA Eina Twin bed frames, $100 each.

To see Jennifer's suggestions for replicating the light fixture and other details in the room, see LMNOP, issue 6, which is online here

Very nice. I really do like the feel of this room and it's even better to see the budget alternatives.

Love the wallpaper, but the room seems disjointed.

"Love the wallpaper, but the room seems disjointed."

I have to agree - I would never use that bedding and that rug with that wallpaper.

I have a headache from looking at that picture.

Love the wallpaper, everything else needs to be completely simple neutral colors. Let the wallpaper be the 'pop' of color.

My two cents: the room is fun, the rug does a gently punchy sweet and sour vs the wallpaper, the bedding seems nonchalant, the proportions (as much as are shown in the image) are inviting. Not to start a tiff, but I never trust anyone who rehearses the generalism 'let the [feature X] be a 'pop' of color'. I hear this and I feel like all the world wants to live in a time share condo in Maui circa 1988.

I'd have loved this room as a kid. For me the wallpaper would be too loud on its own - it actually needs the 2 other competing patterns to mitigate it & take it down a peg. Most kids don't crave restrained neutrals; they crave visual stimulation. Kids' rooms are the perfect opportunity to let some wild psychedelia play itself out. Kids can be restrained minimalists later! The white clip lamp lightens the blue up considerably. I don't even like blue and I love this room. The map rug isn't the most beautiful thing in the world but it cuts the baroqueyness of the wallpaper, and if I were 5 I'd be having a love affair with it. PS Dino, I don't know you, but please come over for dinner.
