Pocket Doors in a Tokyo Bedroom
Tokyo, Japan

I spent the last 10 days traveling in Japan — Tokyo and Kyoto — here's a peek at John's one bedroom apartment near the Daikanyama neighborhood of Tokyo. A recent transplant from New York, John's small bedroom is open to the rest of the apartment but can be closed off with a series of double-hung pocket doors...

The pocket doors were about half the width of a standard American door — making it much easier to hang the two doors side by side when they are hidden away. Though the doors aren't usually closed, it is a nice option to be able to separate the bedroom from the rest of the apartment.

Thanks, John!

That's pretty sweet! Considering the spaces are usually much smaller over there, this is a great solution for allowing for separate areas of living/sleeping, but still factoring in the small amount of space.

I really like this idea. I'd say it wouldn't work for kids but for a single person or childless kids in a smaller space it is a fantastic idea.

I have to admit I'd like it. When the family got bigger than a couple with one small child it wouldn't be practical - but it's very pretty and extremely functional for one or two people.

Very unique and cool looking. I wonder if the idea could be incorporated into any larger studio apartment.

We had these in our downtown Toronto condo for a while, but the doors were clear glass. They worked well.

When I lived in Tokyo these doors were run on tracks laid on or into the floor. This is sooooo much better.

Um, well, how do I put this? John can invite me into his pocket-doored bedroom any time he likes.

...just sayin'.
