New York designer Bryant Keller's specialty is creating the kind of bedroom that makes you feel a little sleepy just by looking at it. This bedroom was created for a young professional couple who have two young children. Even though the bedroom lacked adequate closet space and had extremely low ceiling, Bryant turned it into a calm retreat. Here's how he did it...
How did you create this bedroom?
Subtle plays of color, texture, and mixed metals are what make this bedroom so appealing. The bed spread has tiny, silver embroidery on a taupe ground, mixed with hand painted gold pillows and cream appliques. Shopping for the same look simply requires looking for items in similar tones, with subtle shifts of texture: creams, taupes, golds. Don't be afraid of trying out multiple tones of the same palate.
Where do you shop for bedding?
A never fail for unique bedding is ABC Carpet and Home on 19th Street and Broadway. Many things are pricey, of course, but they also have interesting sari throw pillows for 20 or 30 bucks that you can throw in your mix to spice up your bedding. More elaborate pillows can be mixed with plain or solid colored ones to create a calmer balance. And sales! They have some great sales if you watch.
On a tight, tight budget try the bedding department at Bed, Bath and Beyond. In recent years they've made an effort to supply interesting throw pillows into the bedding department. I've found sequined pillows there that would dazzle in a fun bedding arrangement.
The old stand by for retail shoppers is Macy's. The huge selection, frequent sales, and opportunity to mix and match in the store make it an easy way to pull from many different collections to create just the look you want.
By the way, all of the bedding doesn't need to be expensive to get the look. Sheets are just sheets. Plain bedspreads can be moderately priced. It's the showy items that you could be willing to spend a little extra on.
Is that a custom bench at the end of the bed? Beutiful room.
Macy's is an awesome place for bedding.

I'm curious how often a couple with two small children will have all 8 of those pillows on their bed.

LOL, IzzyIzzy, I only have 2 extra decorative pillows on my bed and my husband hates them. If I had that many pillows on my bed they would definately be on the floor.

It certainly does make me feel sleepy just looking at it!
Oh and agree with Izzy about the pillows... whatever happened to form following function?

Tight budget = Bed, Bath and Beyond? Clearly this person has no idea what a really tight budget is. Tight budget? Try Home Goods, Target, IKEA, TJ Maxx.
Great room and good advice, though.

Quiltmaster: amen! (I'd also add: Ebay, Craigslist and local thrift stores are great for tight budget decor.)

I have a 3 year old and keep 7 pillows on my bed. She will occasionally pull them off to make beds for her dollies but she also loves to help me make the bed in the morning. She gets to do the pillows on Daddy's side :)

Does anyone know where that rug is from? Exactly what I am looking for in my new Master Suite.

I was enjoying this article and his advice right up until "sheets are just sheets." WHAT? I'd take soft sheets and a hideous duvet cover over crap sheets and good-looking cover any day.

Amen to that about the sheets. I hate the ones that pill up. And some of those polyester and cotton-blends are really scratchy.

For sheet recommendations:
Try the "Luxury Collection" at Kohl's. It will change your life. They have 600, 800, and 1000 thread count sets. Worth buying at full price, but go early at the sales and you'll be much happier!

I LOVE the shelving/storage on the wall around the bed. What cabinetry is this?
