Chinoiserie Bed

7-18-red-bed.jpg

Red Hot. It's amazing what a splash of color can do browsing the Anthropologie site we found this attractive chinoiserie bed in a bright red. We couldn't help but notice it. We imagine the aluminum frame makes it surprisingly light and easy to move, too...

The bed is also available in white. Queen is $1,898. King is $1,998. Expensive as it is, we were surprised to notice that the lower side-frames were not painted as the rest of the bed. If you're a bedskirt person we suppose this detail doesn't matter as much?

You'd have to be a bedskirt person -- look at that second set of legs down there, under the bed. I have a weird suspicion that the fancy frame can be so lightweight because it's not the structure holding up the mattress.

How about using this with the shades we were all discussing the other day? http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/window-coverings/delia-shades-026334

I am not into Anthropologies. I think their stuff is crappy and expensive. It is supposed to be boho chic....but I think they're made for posers. sorry!

I never noticed the bottom before, looks so cheap!! I still love the "idea" of this bed though. Anyone ever owned Anthropologie furniture?? Is it really not worth the money?

I love the idea of the pop of colour though. Maybe the Scavenger will come up with a nice old bed that needs a paint job? The poppy red colour is fantastic!

I'd be bored with that in..oh...about 6 months? The color would reak havoc with linens as well. I really cannot understand why such ugly stuff is so popular on the East Coast. Seriously. I don't get it.

Laurab, I've never owned anything but I've visit the store here in Boston. I just think their stuff is made for hipsters..or wannabe cool peeps. Alot of ther things look like they're from a yard sale...which is fine but why pay that much? And have you ever seen their clothes? The quality is poor but the price is high. i'd rather go to the salvation army.

I like them a lot for inspiration, I do really like the style and I'm not very good at putting stuff like that together in my own head, so I appreciate the help from their stylists or store designers or buyers or whoever I should thank for that!

I couldn't afford to buy any of their furniture, but it does give me ideas of things I could look for on my own whether it be in another store or on craigslist or in a thrift shop. I do buy little trinkets in there once in a while if I find one I really like, and once in a whiel they have spectacular sale prices. I almost bought (and kicked myself for not doing it) a huge linen drumshade in a beautiful yellow color that they had on sale for $10. There wasn't a thing wrong with it, it was just last season's item or something. I see little bargains like that pretty frequently there (at least at the one in Boston).

scydream--I understand if you think anthropologie isn't worth the money, but they do sell clothing from numerous suppliers. Maybe what you've seen is from a company with dubious quality. However, a lot of brands they carry are fantastic quality. I have some adorable dresses from there that I've had for years and that I love because they are cotton and machine washable and still look as great as the day I bought them. Their housewares are great too--really cute and different. Their furniture is something I would stear clear of though--it doesn't look comfortable and is super overpriced. But the quality of most of their clothing isn't poor, you just have to look at the brands.

thanks btotheb, maybe you're right..it must be the brand. I am a little hard on them but the clothes I've seen was rediculouly priced. I thought the quaility was like forever 21. I shop at forever 21..but atleast I know what I am getting for that price. Maybe I will pay them a visit again.

When I saw this in their catalog, I had that, "oh, I found the bed for me," moment. Until I saw the price. And realized I'm trying to wean myself off the store, due to their politics (which seem somewhat incongruous with the image they project). Why, though, must they make such cute dresses?

I have to agree that most of their stuff is junk. (Attractive junk, but mostly junk, especially the endless racks of acrylic & rayon clothes that cost waaay too much.) I sort of like their upholstered furniture, but would never be able to afford it even if I wasn't susupicious of the the quality. The fabric prints are great - I have a set of curtains from Anthropologie that I adore.

I can never resist going into the stores though. The in-store displays are often even more creative than the photos in the catalogs. There's some talented designers working for that company!

But I still wouldn't buy that bed. Bedskirts seem inherently fussy to me.

the bed is sexy...but...i cant stop thinking. its one of those beds that will make noise every time you move. and if so..that...can and will be annoying...especially if you have company ...ahem...over.

and as far as a bed skirt for this, i think a box pleat will do nicely.

i dig the store, its great for lil burst of inspiration.

Sure thing scydream. Now that I think about it, I think the only two brands I buy from there are Fei and Odille (and a few Velvet things). I've had great luck with those in terms of quality and style. Generally I end up with an armfull of clothes and quickly weed through them in the dressing room since a lot of their stuff looks great on the rack but not so great once on. I agree that anything like rayon tops are probably not worth the money. But I disagree about their housewares--I've had some items for years that have held up great. But I will agree, after my initial post of defending Anthro since I love it, that you do need to try on and make sure you go with a brand that holds up--and they do carry some great brands (Joe's jeans too!). Their furniture, while eye pleasing, just isn't worth it at all to me. I think they have a wooden headboard (just the headboard!) for over 2,000 that they sell...I don't know who would pay that.....

WAY overpriced for the quality.

Anthropologie has cute, colorful dishes and other small accessories. You can buy one of something and mix it into a larger setting, the way you would a flea market find.

Anthropologie is a cleaned-up version of early 1970s Haight Ashbury style, minus the unshaven drugged-out types, the recession, and the entire Nixon administration.

That can be an appealing bit of nostalgia, though with someone like me who's old enough and from the correct coast to just barely remember the real thing, it mostly sends me screaming to the thrift store.
