Hemnes Four-poster Bed Frame at Ikea

08.13.hemnes.jpg

When it comes to furniture from Ikea, we've often questioned the quality. But in the new IKEA Catalog 2008, we couldn't help stopping at the Hemnes four-poster bed frame. Designed by Nike Karlsson of IKEA Sweden, it's made of solid wood (pine, albeit) and is finished in a bright yellow lacquer.

The $339 queen-sized frame is just that blast of color we always dream about for our apartment. The included bed base is composed of solid wood slats for support. Buy the frame without the bed base for $299.

With those tall, skinny legs, can you say "wobble, wobble?"

I have to agree... the skinny legs look questionable. But the overall form factor is nice.

Does it really have a lacquer finish? I haven't seen it in person yet, but it looks to me like a tinted stain, I feel like I can see the knots of the pine through the finish, especially in the catalogue.

Definitely NOT lacquer. It's a light lemony-yellow stain, and the grain of the wood is very visible.

Very cute bed, but if you're looking for bright yellow lacquer, you won't find it here.

yes, AT's description is incorrect. the correct description could have been gotten directly out of the catalog. "stained, clear laquered solid pine" it's stained, and the clear laquer is over that. the clear laquer is for protection.

I have this bed, and it really isn't a bright yellow, but I love the color. It isn't wobbly at all, though there will be no hanging and swinging from the upper rails. Shoot. Overall, I think it is great so far. I was thrilled to find that color, as well as solid wood.

i've always shied away from ikea beds, though. i feel it's just asking to fall right through the center and then having the legs break off.

I just saw it yesterday - they have this version in the sheer lemon wash with a clear lacquer on top. They also have a non-lacquered version on sale (in some stores) in a dark-medium brown color. I would love the yellow much more if it wasn't so sheer - it looks cheap in person.

Alas, it doesn't come in a king.

I have the bed in my guestroom and it is wobbly. It does not feel solid at all. But for now, that's what is going in there...it's better than a mattress on the floor!

I've had an ikea bed for the last 5 years, and while the matress isnt great the frame is fine and sturdy. I'm hoping to upgrade to a queen in November once I've saved up enought for the matress I really want :-)

i'm brittanykate's boyfriend and the bed does wobble. she would like to add that the skinny mattress makes the bed look "flimsy"

Powkang, do I know you? Because I both fell through the center of my Ikea bed, and had the legs break off. Humiliated, and then infuriated.

As it might not be bright for some, it is pretty bright yellow for me. I personally built one and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Will be easier thought if I had someone to help me. ..

Powkang, Asterix--it's a year after this post started, and I just read your comments. And fell out of bed laughing. You crack me UP! I think I won't buy that Hemnes, though.

I bought this bed in queen size, and it's just perfect. I chose one of the more expensive mattresses to go with it and it is solid and very comfortable. I really like the thin posts; they don't have to be extremely structuraly strong because they just have to hold themselves up. They give a nice sense of space to the bed when you're in bed but they aren't too imposing. I love it.

I forgot something: the rails are the perfect size to put coat hangers on so you could turn it into a wardrobe bed
