NY Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Similar Looking Bed?

5.20bed.jpgDear AT,

I am desperately trying to find a nice dark wood queen bed for my newly renovated bedroom.

I am slowly filling the room with black and deep rich colored wood.

I find it incredibly hard to locate furniture that is not too frilly or over the top and not too contemporary.

Something right in the middle that carried enough interest but affordable-I can't spend a lot.

I really like this style for a bed, but I have no info. on this specific bed.

Does anyone have any ideas who made this piece or know of a design company that carries similar looking bedroom furniture? Thanks! Anna

The bed in the pic reminds me of Martha Stewart's line. Looks pretty classic and could probably go either contemporary or more traditional:

Charles P. Rogers also has similarly versatile beds. What is your price range?

Unfortunately, you pretty much have to go with a new-ish bed. Most antique beds were much narrower than today's queen size, and it's almost impossible to find anything that size earlier than mid-century.

The problem to watch out for is that new antique-style beds don't mix well with real antiques. Either the new piece looks cheap, or the antiques look shabby. If your other dark wood pieces are genuine antiques with a patina, you might want to try an iron (or brass) bed. I also saw a fabulous headboard made from an antique door once -- it was simply hung on the wall behind the bed.

Good luck.

This type of solid dark wood bed comes up a lot on Craigslist here in DC, and you can't beat the prices. Perhaps looks at 2nd hand if you haven't tried that route yet?

I like this one for example...

Stickley has this type of furniture too.

Z Gallerie has some nice dark wood beds that seem reasonable:

the Door Store has a couple of models in espresso that aren't exactly like what you show in the photo, but do fit the not too frilly/not too modern bill. I bought the Paris bed in queen size earlier this year and have been very happy with it:

There are companies that remake antique ones so that they hold modern mattresses...

Broyhill always has something very similar. Could also try Thomasville and Restoration Hardware, with the latter being not as antique looking. I purchased my bed from Broyhill and had the same requirements as you . . . something in the middle that wasn't to ornate, but not too modern.

I got this in my email this morning. If you have a Big Lots near you they have Broyhill Furniture for 70% off. I have seen some of the merchandise at the store and it is top quality.

My parents had a very similar bed for decades -- I think they bought it in the '70s. You could get lucky at a yard sale.

Here's a similar style from Overstock for $699:

I just bought a bed from them recently; it was very inexpensive and is super sturdy (unlike my previous bed from DWR). And you can't beat the shipping price -- $2.95.

As citygirlincountry said, check Big Lots. I've seen really nice furniture at some stores.

My price range is approx a thousand and under. Unless it is this bed exactly - i could possibly come up with the funds! What I like best about this bed is the different toned inlays of wood in browns and espresso-which I am finding hard to find as most beds are completely solid. Anymore suggestions? The person who owns this bed had a listing on ebay for the bedding seen in the picture and I asked her where she got it and she told me she got it as a cast off. Her mother's friend is an interiror designer and her client decided not to take this bed, so she got it-Unfortuneatly she has not been able to find out any info on the maker and it has been awhile since I have heard from her...
