Sleeping Beauty. Check out the Matera Bed With Storage, exclusively from Design Within Reach. Designed by Sean Yoo, the Walnut bed is just part of the attractive Matera Collection and includes six vaccuum-closing drawers...

Bad Feng Shui aside, some of us need more storage! The queen-sized Matera measures H 38" W 63.5" D 82.5" Platform H 15". The bed is made of Solid American Walnut frames, bed rails and drawer fronts. The headboard, footboard and drawer sides are MDF with walnut veneer. The queen with storage costs $4500. The standard queen-sized bed (no storage) is $2500. Both options are also available in king size (+$300).

For two similar-but-less-expensive options, check out BluDot's Modulicious Storage Beds and the surprisingly cheapMANDAL Bed with Storage from IKEA.

Now that the Mandal has been out for a little while, does anyone have it and have any thoughts on how it has held up? I would love to move up to a queen and jettison the Gothic Cabinetcraft platform base with drawers I'm using now, but am concerned that this will be flimsy - I love the Blu Dot but want to keep using my same headboard.

I love how the nightstand does not interfere with the opening of the drawers.

Beautiful bed, but 4500? DWR is over priced imho.

$4500 might actually convince me to throw away some crap

I'm with Jems: love the way that nightstand works... but you would likely have to ditch the nightstand you have and buy that one or put up a nightshelf...

geeze that's a lot of money... $12/day to pay it off in a year... $375/month. sheesh.

This is beautiful, but isn't $4500 kind of expensive for something that utilizes so much MDF (the headboard, footboard and drawer sides are MDF with walnut veneer)?

When I see a bed like that, all I can think of are bruised shins.

wow, that is a beautiful bed! I love the sleek detail on the bed frame. It's a little bit pricey but I am so sick and tired of disposable IKEA furniture and have been looking for something that I can hang on to for a long time. This looks like it. I am heading out to the nearest DWR studio tomorrow.

Furniture 101:

Beautiful, well designed furniture made in an eco friendly way costs money. Veneered MDF is used because it will not shrink and expand due to seasonal air moisture changes, compared to solid wood over large surfaces that would likely crack. Also, it is used for economy of materials – using solid wood in these applications is unnecessary and wasteful of expensive Walnut. This is standard practice for high-end solid wood furniture.

Any questions class?

I own the Matera bed (Queen with storage).
It looks really nice, is tremendously solid and the drawers slide close so nicely with the vacuum.

HOWEVER, two big issues:
1. No bedside table if you want to be able to access 1/3 of the drawers on each side of the bed, unless you like the Matera bedside table (I don't, no drawer).
2. No ledge at the headrest to stick a clock, cell-phone, book, glass of water, etc.

If I was to do it all over, I'm not sure I would buy a Matera bed...
