Stearns & Foster makes one of the Rolls-Royces of the mattress world, but they are not as hard to find. Founded in 1846 by George Stearns and Seth Foster, Stearns & Foster has been about luxury since the very beginning.
These mattresses are traditional but have integrated modern materials. They feature heavy duty inner springs, foam and memory foam layers and luxurious fabrics that allow you to experience "sumptuous comfort from the moment you lie down."
Coming with a 10 year warranty, Stearns & Foster mattress and box spring sets run between $1300 and $6000, which most under $2000.

I have to give Stearns & Foster mattress a thumbs down. In less than 4 months after getting my $1200 set home it developed a 2 inch depression in the middle. And the side I slept most frequently on got lumpy beyond belief. Trying to return it has been a bear. Do yourself a favor, stay away stay very far away.
I thought that Duxiana beds were supposed to be the Rolls Royces of mattresses. Maybe Stearns & Foster is just the Cadillac.
Shelby, gotta say I am right there with you. I bought my $1200 S & F set three years ago, and during the last year it's developed that depression in the middle.
I hafta say I probably would not buy a pillow top mattress again. Can't flip it, and rotating it doesn't help get it back to its new shape anymore.
We just bought a plush Simmons mattress. I highly recommend, and not because it's incredibly comfortable but because it made my bf STOP SNORING - - completely. A miracle and worth every penny!
Don't believe the hype! I had heard how great Stearns & Foster matresses were and bought one a few years back... Although it felt fine in the store, it was so firm under the cushy top layer that I would wake up with numb arms (Thank goodness I was able to return it). What they don't tell you about heavy duty inner springs is that while they may never wear out, they just don't adjust to your body in the same way that lighter springs do.
Honestly, I think Sears is a prime place to shop for mattresses. Of course their mattresses have different names from other shops, just to make comparisons difficult. But they seem to consistently have 50% off sales on select mattresses. We were there at the beginning of January, my fiancee and I, and felt like we'd found a great deal on an awful day. We hadn't found an apartment where we'd live as a couple, and buying a mattress then would be a real hassle. But the sales lady actually talked us out of a sale that day, explaining that they have these sales all the time. We kinda shrugged and said okay and left. And sure enough, watching those Sunday circulars, they just keep having those sales. If you have any interest in a mattress by one of the big S makers, it's worth dropping by Sears.
We bought a Stearns & Foster mattress as it was suposed to be the best. What a mistake. Within a couple years it developed depressions that would not go away. We have flipped it, turned it every which way but loose! No good. We have just purchased a Sealey bed and am hoping to get a refund or new Stearns for out extra bedroom. I would not buy another S & F again. It was a total letdown.
We bought a stearns and foster pillowtop bed 3 years ago and thoguht it would surely last the 10 years the warranty covers! Well it has deep body impressions on both sides that we sleep on and is miserable! Now trying to go through the warranty process with MARSHA from the Mattress Firm in Denver is a complete nightmare! Absolutlely horrible customer service and her snotty attitude to boot. Will NEVER purchase a stearns and foster or buy from the Mattress Firm again!
I was told that Stearns & Foster mattresses were the "top of the line". I paid a top of the line price for mine, too. After only 3 months, the thing has developed a pit. Once I fall into this pit, rolling over, or even getting out of bed become strenuous tasks. Of course, the pillow top fluffs back up when I get off the bed, making it impossible to measure the requisite 1.5 inches to get the thing replaced.
I made a $2000 gamble, and lost.
I don't want to see anyone else go through what I've been through. First of all, never ever buy a mattress online. Secondly, make sure you can get a complete refund, not an exchange. I bought a Stearns and Foster mattress set, when I had originally wanted a Simmons Beautyrest. The Stearns and Foster was far more expensive. I thought I had purchased a soft, comfortable mattress. When delivered, it was very, very firm. It was so high, my deep pocket queen size bedding didn't fit at all. My queen size comforter doesn't cover the mattress. The mattress and box spring are visible. The bed is so high, I have to run and jump to get on top of it. I have been having a world of trouble exchanging it. My advice to mattress shoppers would be to go to a retail store, try out a mattress there, and buy one on sale.
I bought my first Stearn's & Foster mattress in 1987. I married in '93 and moved in '96. This mattress is amazing-it is on a captains bed and now my 7 yr old sleeps on it. Not one dent or bulge.
When we bought our king bed in '96 we continued with the S&F tradition. 3 kids later (one pregnancy being a set of twins)and a huge fight with Cancer, the mattress started bothering my back.
I naturally thought the mattress went thru what I had and it was time for a new one. I bought a S&F again-Top of the Line- for $2,000...It has been 6 months and it has body impressions and feels like sleeping up hill. I have back pain and so does my husband (and he could sleep thru anything and anywhere!)
The S&F Warranty says 10 yrs, and to go to the original place of purchase-Like the others said- they will never get 1 1/2 inches indentation with all the memory foam faking it out. They also will offer a refund-at their discretion-you tell me how many of those they have offered.
I am fed up! I have been thru hell and back between invitro and cancer and a bone marrow transplant. All I wanted was to sleep well and not wake up with more pain than usual...
I will start complaining...I don't think $2000 for a mattress is cheap by no means...Maybe I am better off with the floor!
My wife and I purchased a S & F Silver Dream 7 months ago. We have "body depressions" that drive us a little crazy. My wife is under 110 lbs, and I am under 200 lbs, we have rotated the mattress but the "depressions" remain. We are told that is a S & F Rep comes out and measures the depression at less than 2", it will be considered normal. I travel for my job, and I am in this bed only 2-3 nights a week. But the "depressions" are there I am dissappointed, I am now looking into purchasing the VI Spring Mattress set.
I bought a sterns n foster mattress 5 years ago......golden elegance, $5,000. matress. I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud, and then it started to sag in the middle. I didn't understand what was happening until my boyfriend asked me why I was sleeping so far off to one side when my bed is an Eastern King. We realized there was a huge sag in the middle. I am 130 pounds live in L.A., and my boyfriend lives in N.Y. Not only was he never here to sleep on it, I was in N.Y. half of the year. I am looking for another matress, and I am bummed because I would love to find a matress the feels as good as that bed did in the beginning but have it last! $5,000. dollars for a matress that sags????? forget it...........
Stearns & Foster at the Sleep Train. Better off being a frickin' hobo than sleeping on this $3000 bean bag of a bed. Can't measure a depression? How about MY depression. this bed is uncomfortable. i can't sleep. I can't get anyone to help with with a lame warranty. NEVER buy from Sleep Train or Stearns and Foster. Complete waste of money. Can you say futon?
After reading so many negative comments about your Sterns & Foster experiences, I now feel validated! We purchased one of their higher-end mattresses for approximately $4000 or so and have awakened each morning with back pain. Also, there are two "pits" that my husband and I each fall into each night. (Forget trying to get together in the middle!) We have had this mattress for a year and I began trying 6 months ago to get some sort of response regarding the warranty. After numerous calls to the store I was given the name of a S&F rep who would be contacting me, and when he didn't I ,at last, tracked him down. He didn't show up for our first appointment and when rescheduled he was 3 hours late. According to his measurements, of course, the sagging did not warrant a replacement. When the bed is made you can clearly see the "pits", and I insisted that this mattress was flawed as it does not properly support the body. After much discussion, he said that he could replace it, but then noticed a spot on the mattress, which now makes the warranty null. I have had a mattress cover on this mattress from the day we first purchased it and being that it is almost undetectable, I believe this very small spot that invalidated our warranty was created when an ice bag leaked a minute amount of water onto the corner of the bed. He actually explained to me that "he would lose his job if he now replaced this for me and he has a family to raise". We left it at having his supervisor contact me so I could go over our predicament with him. Needless to say....I never heard form him again. So, we are now purchasing another mattress and it will not be a Sterns & Foster. I may not be well rested but I feel better after venting!
We bought a Stearns & Foster mattress from Macy's about 18 months ago and it has the same sags that everyone else mentions. I was going to go through the warranty process but have decided not to bother after reading about other peoples' experiences. I'm going to try cutting off the "pillow top" layer as suggested above, and use a memory foam topper instead. Thanks for saving me months of aggrivation with the S&F company -- on top of all the money I've wasted!
We bought a Monet Garden Stearns and Foster mattress at Mattress Firm in Chandler, AZ four months ago, and are very disappointed with the mattress. Two months after having it, we noticed body impressions on both sides that we sleep on (both my husband and I are small. We weight less that 140 lbs). We immediately contacted the vendor wanted to replace the mattress. They came to our house to evaluate the mattress, and told us that the indentation was less than 1 1/2 inch. So they would not replace the mattress. Their customer service is horrible. We will NEVER purchase a stearns and foster or buy from the Mattress Firm again!
My husband and are very unhappy with our Stearns & Foster mattress purchasing just 6 mo ago at a VERY high price. We are both having back pains from the indentions in it and we are just average build. This company does not guarantee their product, and we will never purchase another one. We are now sleeping on our old mattress that we bought years ago for $249.
We bought ours at Fingers furniture in Houston TX about 10 months ago and we are having problems with the depression and worse than that is that the memory foam no longer works. It is sad that a $3000 mattress would not work after a few months of usage. We are in the process of returning it but based on what I read here, we might not be able to do so.
I guess we should all consider a class action law suit (just to get our $$ back) to address this manufacturing issue with S&F and maybe include Fingers furniture (other mattress companies) as well.
Unbelievable, I am going through the same thing other people have experienced. I bought a stearns and foster bed 2 months ago and I am sleeping 1 foot from the side of the bed because of the huge indentation that keeps me from sleeping in the middle. I hate this bed. I have always heard from mattress places this is the best bed money can buy. NOT!!!!! I will never buy a stearns and foster ever again.
Just purchased my Wall Street Stearns and Foster (cushion firm) 3 WEEKS ago and noticed the depression in the mattress after one week. I called the store where I purchased it (who is going out of business) and they gave me the S&F phone number. I called S&F and they said the depression has to be 1 1/2 inches for a warranty. I am sorry to say after 3 weeks it is ONLY 1/2 inch. I had a Sealy for 20 years without any sagging. I wish I never got rid of it. I recommend for anybody reading this, do not buy into the hype of Stearns and Foster. It is great for the first few weeks, then they sag.
Bought a S and F latex bed at the behest of the salespeople at Mattress Gallery. I was told it wouold be supportive and great for my back. It is so soft it collapses underneath my mid section making sleep an impossibilty. I am literally being crippled by this bed and can't get help from anyone...not the store where I bought or Stearns and Foster. I am now getting a lawyer. Don't risk your money on a SHI* and Foster!
Cardis sold us a VERY expensive Stearns and Foster 3 years ago. After two recent vacations where my back did not hurt, I finally
realized it was our VERY expensive, king-sized mattress. I called Cardis and they sent someone out to measure the depressions on either side of the hump in the middle. They measured 1 1/2 in deep on each side. They consider this normal???? Their answer in a word, "Yes!"
I have two Sealy Posturepedics that are over 25 years old, no depressions, and each is more comfortable than this new one.
Do yourself a favor and DON'T BUY A STEARNS AND FOSTER. THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT.
Count me in as an unsatisfied S&F customer. My wife and I bought a a King size Granville Street model and less than 6 months in we have almost 2" sagging on both of our sides. We managed to get it approved for an exchange but they will not swap out the box spring set or even consider giving us a refund. They said they would upgrade our mattress to a better S&F, but after reading this I just want to buy something different. It's the first high end mattress purchase we made too. I guess more expensive is not always better.
There's more of us out there than I ever thought! Also count us in as very, very dissatisfied S&F customers. We bought our FIRST Stearns & Foster Wall Street in Oct, 2005. We just had our FOURTH replacement mattress delivered today. Of course the indentations were over 1 1/2", sometimes as much as 3"! Each time the servicemen came, they remarked how deep these impressions were! When we explained our experience, they were so surprised, saying this is very unusual, S&F is the "Cadillac" of mattresses. Ha! Now we're stuck with them because they say if we change companies, we will lose our warranty. I'm going to write to S&F and see what happens. We're seniors and only wanted to have one last good mattress in this last part of our lives. The only consolation we have is knowing we're not the only ones. What a terrible experience this has been.
why don't you all get together and sue them???? just a thought.
I agree, Stearns and Foster's Silver Dream is a nightmare. We purchased from Macy's in Atlanta and I noticed the sagging within the first few weeks, can't get the infamous inch and half indention measurement for replacement. Maybe a lawyer in the crowd will purchase one of these pieces of junk and sue Stearn and Foster's for false advertising, defective merchandise, and punitive damages for the pain and suffering so many customers have endured.
Same as everyone else! We purchased a Stearns & Foster Granville Street at The Bay (Canada) about a year ago. While heavenly for a couple of months, it too develeoped the deep depresseions on each side. Because we had a warranty, we called, they sent out the measuring guy, it met the depression limit and we got a replacement. Now, the replacement is doing exactly the same thing! Our next recourse is to approach the Bay regarding a refund, but why can't we all sue?
IBOUGHT one sterns and foster mattress sunk in after a few months got a replacement supposed to be comparable have not had it to long and not supportive either sinks in also have not called yet but believe me I will and when I do I will complain a lot they did not even follow up with us to see if we were satisfied with the replacement so I sure would not recommend them and if I dont get any satisfaction will have to go to our tv station for complaints

In a word, garbage. Save yourself years of headaches and sleepless nights and buy ANYTHING else. Buy a plank to sleep on. At least you'll have some support for your back.
We paid almost $2000 for our Stearns & Foster Worth Avenue king mattress (Worthless Avenue is a much more fitting name). It has huge body impressions that the genius technicians call "normal". Is it normal to sleep with a gigantic hump in the middle of the bed? Is it normal to roll off the bed because it's so slanted from the center? Is it normal to wake up so stiff you can’t even get up because your back is out of alignment from sleeping in a giant pothole? I have been in a battle with Cardi's Furniture for over a year about this mattress and they have finally agreed to give me back a 75% credit of the cost. That's better, but I should get it all back in cash for the BS we've put up with for so long.
One of the sales people at Cardi's told me that they no longer sell the S&F line because of known defects. But that doesn't stop Cardi's management from fighting me every step of the way to replace an obviously unsupportive, sagging lump of a mattress. My husband & I are buying a new mattress and plan to contact an attorney to pursue a case against both Cardi's and Stearns & Foster for false advertising and failing to live up to their stated warranty.
STAY AWAY FROM STEARNS & FOSTER!!!!

Who would've thought that S&F would sell defective material to their customers who are paying mega-bucks to keep their company alive?
I purchased the Stearn & Foster Monet (FIRM) mattress this past January, 2007 and I've experienced the sink hole that everyone is talking about in the middle of the mattress. I've tried to rotate it thinking that might solve it's problem...to no avail though. I've contacted their customer service (Naperville, IL) and they will be having someone come by within a week. In addition, they were completely hesitant about the procedures that are actually done for a replacement.
It's sad that I sleep better on my daughter's bed...and I bought her mattress from Wicke's Furnture for only a couple hundred bucks...it's much firmer than mine, which cost me Thousands!!!
Has anyone reported this company to the BBB? This is a complete crime for a company to be raking in millions in sales and not have the obligation to follow thru on their warranty.
We need to take action against this mattreess company and any store who knowingly is selling their products to earn commission and sales! What can we do to have these stores stop selling these defective merchandise and encouraging Stearns & Foster stay in business and not cater to it's paying customers? It's ironic that we have to call "Customer Service" when we aren't receiving any service of any kind!
DO NOT buy any Stearns & Foster Mattresses!!!

Stearns and Foster matresses used be really great matresses. The reason why they sink in, is because they have been using memory foam in their matresses for the last 10 years. I've been sleeping on Stearns and Foster for 30 years and never had a problem until I bought a new one this year. I had a feeling they were making them differently and sure enough they are. They used to make them with all latex. in the last 4 months I have taken back 4 matresses by S & F because they sink in and they keep telling me at the store that they're supposed to sink in and that it's supposed to conform to your body. I went to Matress World in Michigan they showed me the difference between latex and memory foam. Latex springs right away when you put your finger on it and memory foam takes longer to spring back. They ruined what was once a perfect matress. They need to go back to the way they used to make them! Even the firm matress by S & F sinks in.

Wow. We just tried out several mattresses in stores today and were immediately hooked on the Stearns and Foster Silver Dream. Andy even decided we should just go for the Cal. King set instead of simply replacing our current Queen sized mattress. Thank God he let me come home and do some research first, because I found all these terrible stories within 5 mins. You guys just saved us $4500, and we are a young couple looking to purchase a home soon too, so 4500 is a lot for us. I know we would have immediately experienced the impressions. He is 6'5 215 and I am 5'11 160. Neither of us are small people--prime target for some serious indentations. I think after what I am reading and what we are currently experiencing with our mattress now, the main problem is the pillow top, in any mattress. If anyone has had a good experience with another mattress brand, I'm all ears. Because we are dragging out my old full sized bed from the guest room until we find something better, and I dont know how long I can stand our legs hanging off the end of it.

Same here. First time buyer of a Stearns & Foster mattress. Based on the reputation I thought it was worth a try. After 5 weeks, my whole 130 lbs. is creating a dip in the side I sleep on and we purchased a firm mattres with the strong coils. This mattress will be going back to the store.

I bought a silverdream 4 years ago. It required replacement due to sagging within 1 year. I developed significant back pain.
Now it is 3 years later and I went in for an MRI after developing excruciating back pain. You'd think I'd know better- its the damn bed! I sleep in a hole.. what did I expect? I thought I had a spinal column tumor.
Now the game begins. Will I get it replaced again? Will the purchase site (a big retailer) try to avoid coverage? We shall see.
Is there a non-memory foam newer version? I will not accept an exact replacement again. The absolute agony I have experienced will take probably weeks of sleeping on a different bed to resolve this but I'm feeling better already.
DO NOT BUY A PILLOWTOP BED FROM STEARNS AND FOSTER OR YOU WILL SUFFER THE SAME FATE.

My wife and I purchased a Stearns & Foster Rose Castle king size no flip pillow top mattress on August 20, 2005 from the Mattress Firm in Houston, Texas and now it has sinkholes on both sides. In late June of 2007 I started having back problems that seem to come from who knows where? After many moths of all kinds of pain and numbness in my neck, arms, hands, legs, feet, chest and back...After many test, MRI's and months of physical therapy they have concluded that I have at least four disk two in my neck and two in my lower back that are bad. On Friday the 29th of February 2008 I had spinal surgery on my neck that in my opinion is the worst kind of surgery possible. We asked ourselves the doctors and the surgeons, what is the cause of this??? Now my wife whom never even takes even an aspirin is having back and neck trouble and is now taking pain and muscle relaxers! Who or what is to blame??? But wait, I have a really good idea of the cause considering we never had this kind of problems before we bought that nightmare of a bed! I'm really not sure what to do but having kids of all ages and not being able to work or even drive, there has to be an answer. Iâm someone who loves to work, fish, hunt and really stay busy and now all I can do is stair at the four walls in whatever room Iâm in at home and sleep on the floor. I called Stearns & Foster today and Mary Cooke tells me that they canât help me to go back to the people at Mattress Firm who sold it to us, one small problem, when they sold us the bed they put on the receipt that all sales are final and any warranty issues that may come up, Stearns & Foster would support with us directly for ten years from the date of purchase as long as we purchased the mattress protector from Mattress Firm to keep from voiding the warranty from any spills or stains.
The Warranty card that was given to us that day states:
ALL STEARNS & FOSTER BEDS CARRY THE SAME WARRANTY.
THE TOTAL LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD IS 10 YEARS. THE PERIOD FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT AT NO CHARGE IS 10 YEARS, EXCEPT FOR TRANSPORTATION COST. YOUR PURCHASE IS ESTABLISHED FROM THE DATE OF YOUR RECIEPT.
The really stickler to the warranty card is below that is!!!
Congratulations

The Mattress Firm sells the beds like this to trick buyers into defective junk!!!
Ohâ By the way Sealy bought out Stearns & Foster a few years back and is riding on the coattails of there name and selling junk so they can make a big profits!!!!
All three of these companiesâs need to be held accountable for the negligence!!!
A lawyer with some real desire to make a name for him/herself, plus a large some of money should get together with the many people that are victimâs of these corporate thieves and help them get restitution for the wrong doing that they are getting away with everyday for years. Please let know what you think. Kevin~

Same story--bought the top of the line from the Bay in Canada - 55% off of the inflated price of $6800. What I notice is that in the winter the memory foam is hard and bulky and it disappears in the summer. The sink hole disappeared when I went into the hospital and was not in my own bed for several weeks. Got the same line- rotate the mattress-- try moving one of these things!
When you guys in the US file a class action suit, don't forget your friends in Canada.
I have inflated my air mattress and am sleeping on that as the Stearns and Foster is a complete and total disaster.

I purchased a very expensive S&F mattress set 18 months ago. At the time of purchase I explicity expressed that I was seaching for a mattress that did not contain memory foam as I was warned by others how "hot" memory foam could be. The salesperson at Macy's stated emphatically that this S&F mattress did not contain ANY memory foam. I even contacted the company via email and they confirmed that the mattress did not contain ANY memory foam. Well, this is the mattress from HELL. I wake up so hot in the middle of the night I am sleepless and miserable. I am sure both these people lied to me about the content of this mattress.
BTW: We have "pits" in the bed already too!

I sure wish I read this page before I bought my second S&F mattress. The one bought 14 years ago (before Sealy purchased S&F) was fab. We bought Monet's Garden 2 1/2 years ago and have the same issues as listed above - body indenations, rolling out of "pits" My husband and I get horrible sleep! At least I travel for work and get a good nights sleep at the fairfield inn - oh the irony. We had Rayco come out & check the warraty- what a joke!
'm up for a class action!!!
DON'T BY A S&F OR SEALY!

I BOUGHT A S&F "ENGLISH MEADOW" AND I END UP ON THE COUCH! TOTAL NIGHTMARE!! CAN'T TAKE THE ROLLING ON MY HUSBAND ANYMORE DURING THE NIGHT!
AFTER READING ALL THIS I FELL MUCH WORST... LOST 2,000.00 DOLLARS!RIDICULOUS!!!
We slept at Borgata Hotel in AC the other day and I fell in love with their mattress.A Sealy one. Please if someone has any comments on the Borgata mattress let me know.
Thank you so much!

I have slept on the Borgata bed in AC and also fell in love with it. We decided to order the bed since we knew we slept great on it (have been to Borgata many, many times). I was told in 6/08 that they were now selling the Water Club beds instead of the Borgata beds which would be even better - WRONG! They are also non-flipable which means I can only shift if around. I have had the bed since 6/08 and there are deep indentations where we sleep - we are not big people! It was great for the first 2-3 months. It feels like sleeping in a pit and my back is killing me - the reason we got the new bed in the first place! I have a claim in with Sealy. I have since slept a few times at the Borgata - that is the bed I want!
