If choosing a mattress is the ultimate personal choice, then consider Tempur-Pedic an awesome mattress, but not everyone's cup of tea.
Started by Bob Trussell, a business guy, in Lexington, Kentucky in 1992, Tempur-Pedic has been a roller coaster success story ever since. Using the (then) new material - viscoelastic - which REALLY WAS created for use by NASA, Tempur-Pedic branded itself as a Swedish company and proceeded to replace regular old mattresses all over the country. Viscoelastic is now a now marketed under many other names, but Tempur-Pedic considers theirs denser and superior.

I don't have the tempurpedic mattress in my home but my family has one in the guest room at home. I absolutely love it and will probably own one at some point in time. I DO however have the pillow which I couldn't live without.
The good thing about Tempur-Pedic is that they let you return it after trying it out for 3-4 months (although I'd hate to be the next in line to get that returned mattress). I knew a couple who returned theirs (but kept the pillows). They said that the hollows that get created around a person's body make moving around difficult. You have to push off to just move from one side of the bed to the other if you want to hug/hold/cuddle/ravish your partner. They called it the anti-sex matress. I've also heard from other people that memory foam beds can be uncomfortabley warm. Mind you, I'm just passing along hearsay. Never tried 'em myself (I'm into futons).
I have the 2" mattress pad and pillow from Overstock.com, and I couldn't immagine life without.
I bought Room and Board's version, which is cheaper, doesn't require a box spring and comes in firm or soft. love it!
My brother has one and echoes the senitments of the above. His wife loves it, but he feels like Gumby when we wakes in the morning. I have a memory foam mattress topper and I love it. Best of both worlds, the comfort of the memory foam, without the exteme Gumby effect.
I have the 3" from Overstock.com, on top of an old futon. I got it after having spinal fusion surgery, and waking up every morning with really sore hips during recovery. After the first few nights on the new foam topper, the hip pain left. I always thought we would eventually move up to the tempurpedic, since I like this one so well, but don't like the idea of the "ruts". Our topper definitely does not do that, even after a year.
I work for a furniture magazine and was just in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago for the Market. I went to an invite-only Tempur-Pedic event (billed "Breakfast In Bed") and drank several Mimosas and sat on a couple of their beds. They gave away white terrycloth bathrobes as swag. Tempur-Pedic knows how to party. Glad to hear they have a good product as well.
I've read that it loses 50% of it's height/density in 3 years
I tried one out a bit in a store once with my husband (just laying there talking...:) and we both felt it was comfy. Then I looked at the price tag. Just too rich for my blood. I would be more interested in the foam pad. Besides, I don't like the idea of sleeping on a thick mattress of foam because I'm not convinced they can stay hygienic over the years and yes, foam is warm beneath you after awhile and I wouldn't want that in August in NY. Now people are mentioned ridges. I'll stay with my plain comfy bed.
My parents have a "traditional" matress with some sort of memory foam pillow top. The memory foam makes the bed incredibly hot -- OK during the winter, not very much fun in the summer. I like the idea of this mattress, but I hate feeling too warm when sleeping.
This will be the year I buy a new mattress - hopefully a new bed too. One of my biggest concerns is that I sleep hot Hot HOT! I guess this won't be the mattress for me.
I'm hoping to go with a platform-ish canopy-ish bed this time. Something like this (but probably not that bed since the headboard and footboard each extend from the floor to 80 inches high and 55 inches across as one welded piece. That'd be a nightmare to move in and out of a small space... but ooh, the bed is so perfect!
Anybody know of a canopy bed along these lines (ie, not feminine? preferably black or metal)
But how does this relate to my comment down by the daybed post? Any sources for varying shapes of cushions in this material?
bought the topper from Costco and it's amazing. I just bought one for my brother who has a bad back and after his first night sleeping on it, he called in sick to stay in bed. and the man has never called in sick...
now that's a rave!
We have the Room & Board memory foam and have never noticed it being warmer than other mattresses. Slept on it all last summer and never noticed any difference in temperature. There is a slight depression when you wake up, but not "ruts". The depression helps keep you from tossing and turning at night. Overall it takes a night or two to get used to it, but then it is just amazing.
I sat on one this weekend in a showroom, and it's not for me. Way too mushy. My friend loves hers, but says she does get hotter during the night (and not in a good way)!
I have bought 2 different 3" mattress pads from overstock-- @ $129 they are worth every penny! The second one went on top of an ancient mattress set and made it liveable again. I think flannel sheets are much worse for stiction. I don't find it too hot (even in a house w/o AC) but do plan on living with a week or so of very unpleasant offgassing.
Oops! My link didn't work... this is the bed I'm thinking of (click my name)
I've had the Tempurpedic original mattress for 2 years now. I haven't experienced any of the negative things people have mentioned. I sleep really really hot, in fact one of the reasons I like the tempurpedic is that it doesn't get hot like my old mattress did. In terms of being able to move, never noticed a problem with that either.
In terms of it being squishy, or having dents, I've noticed neither, but you really can't judge a mattress until you've slept on it. The store I bought it from has a special mattress room where when you lie down on a bed, the overhead lights above you dim off--no lie. You are encouraged to take off your shoes and spend 15 minutes or so just lying there. Makes for a funny scene for passers-by.
Overall wouldn't trade it for anything. Oh and it doesn't require a box-spring, just a rigid wood support. They recommend a piece of plywood.
I bought a foam mattress pad from Bergad (now Isoform) after reading good reviews on epinions, and I love it. Their mattresses are cheap compared to Tempurpedic and they match all the same guarrantees and deals.
I had a terrible reaction to the chemicals in the memory foam, and was unable to breathe. I was unable to remain in the room where the mattress was for any length of time. The stench was powerful. The term "hypoallergenic" isn't exactly scientific.
I later learned that the mattress contains "toluene" in substantial quantities. Just do a quick search of all of the toxic effects of this chemical on fetuses and humans, and it might give you pause. I was unable to be in the same room as the thing.
The showroom samples, which will have outgassed the chemicals for months, might not give any indication of this problem. But it is a common one. There are similar chemicals in some conventional mattresses, some of which use similar materials.
To AIMEE:
Hi, I checked out the Room and Board mattress you recommended and it's $1399! (http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/prod.do?pfid=093322&grpType=0)
Can that be right? The last time I looked at a Tempurpedic, it was about $1000.
To all:
I have been hankering after a Tempurpedic for some time but can't afford it for now. Perhaps I'll check out Overstock's topper. Thanks a bunch!
My mom's surgeon recommended a Select Comfort mattress rather than a Tempurpedic prior to her spinal fusion surgery. His reason was body weight. Generally, "prosperous" people benefit the most from a memory foam mattress. (Nice way of saying fat!)
In any case, has anyone tried the memeory foam mattress from DWR?
We bought ours a couple of years ago, and I'm not entirely sure of the price. I'm not going to lie to you -- it wasn't cheap. However, when we looked at Tempurpedics, they wouldn't sell the mattress withought the boxspring, which made it expensive and bulky (someone else said that you could use plywood but they told us no). That being said, I slept on the cheapest mattress from Macy's for ten years (miserable), so for me the price was worth it.
I bought the Original Tempurpedic bed after my brother recommended it. He said the first night he slept on it was the best sleep he ever had up to that point. He has been sleeping on it for probably over 3 years now and he said it is still like new. Maybe those people that complained about the mattress breaking down didn't put the mattress on a solid flat surface?
I have a platform bed that have slats. I didn't want to pay extra or have the extra height from the special foundation they sell for this mattress. So, I just nailed down plywood on top of the bed slats and that works just fine. I've had mine for about 3 months now. So far, I'm extremely happy with it. I like it much better than a regular spring mattress.
When I got it, there was the expected smell. But it goes away eventually and didn't really bother me that much. At least I know I got a brand new mattress hehe.
I will have to wait until summer to comment more on the heat issue. But, so far I haven't had a problem with it even though hey turn up the heat way too high in my apartment sometimes.
As to the sex, Barbie just broke up with me so I haven't had sex in awhile. Hopefully my makeover will change things... (Click on my name if you don't get the joke).
Oh, one more thing. My reasoning to justify buying this mattress is since most of us spend 8 hours out of every 24 hours on a bed, $1000 seems like a reasonable amount of money to spend on a mattress doesn't it? ;)
My wife and I bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress last summer to go with our new Modernica Case Study bed. No box spring. I wouldn't want to sleep on anything else at this point. The offgassing was noticeable for about a week, but then, we'd just had the hardwood floors in the bedroom refinished, so we didn't sleep in the bedroom for a couple of weeks after we got the mattress anyway, and had an exhaust fan in the window running in the room non-stop for those two weeks, so when we did finally move back in, there was no smell from either the mattress or the floor. I don't notice any extra heat, and no "ruts", either. The bed gradually adjusts its shape to fit your form when you lay in it, but that's expected; that's what it does. If it gets hot for you, maybe you're not using sheets? I noticed that first week before we put sheets on, it seemed a bit warm.
Before we got the mattress, we had a 4-inch mattress topper. If you have a mattress topper and think you're getting the real visco-elastic foam experience, I believe you're mistaken. Our mattress topper was a moderate improvement on the mattress it was sitting on. The Tempur-Pedic was like a quantum leap improvement, a totally different experience. My wife had been having back problems with our original mattress. They were slightly lessened by the topper, but they're totally gone now.
It's true, it ain't cheap. My credit cards are still smoking, and we've put off other renovations to the house. But, as someone said above, you spend 8 hours a day in bed. I think we made the right choice. The rest of the house can wait.
I did a lot of mattress research about two years ago... and discovered a similar product: latex foam. More similar to a spring mattress, but comforable, soft and totally natural. I bought one from foamsweetfoam.com They were very nice. Highly reccomended to check out!
i slept on my parents' old tempurpedic for a while, and my complaints were the same as theirs: it retained a lot of heat, and i would always wake up stiff and sore--i think it is because it supports you SO well that you can spend the entire night without changing position.
i have a memory foam topper, though, that i love. i prefer it on a nice, firm futon, but it's great on a regular mattress, too. and, so much cheaper.
I have the DWR version and I love it. I will never sleep on a spring mattress again. It doesnt get hot and the smell went away after a couple of days.
I also have the DWR's Sonno mattress. I really do love it. But watch out, you end up oversleeping more often. :)
DWR has a sale now:
http://www.dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=7005
$1098 for a queen.
Also, DWR's version has a partial "Coolmax" cover which I suppose can help the heat problem. I'm not sure if it helps, but so far the mattress doesn't seem any hotter than my old traditional mattress.
I've been using my Tempur-Pedic bed for 3 years and just love it. I have a small twin size bed which is excellent for a single guy like myself. The bed holds up pretty well when my girlfriend vists every weekend. Both of us fit nicely in the twin with no complaints whatsoever. I guess because of its design, it lets you sleep comfortably without having to move too much during your dream state. Oh, did I tell you it fixed my back problem a few years ago? Thanks to my Tempur Twin, golfing can be fun again.
I spent a whole paycheck on it ... well worth it. Also nice to know it has a 20 year warranty.
We've had the DWR version for a week. So far, it's been fantastic to sleep on. I found it firmer then the Temperpedic (and we bought the "medium" firmness). I don't notice ruts at all, it doesn't really dent in that much when you're lying down. I do toss and turn a little less, but don't wake up sore.
It smelled like a mfer when we got it, but the smell has faded. We left it in a room with the fan going for a day, but in retrospect I wish we had the patience to wait about a week!
We'll see how it goes in the summer, because we don't do air con. I'm hoping the ventilation channels and the coolmax will make it ok.
regards,
trillium
Got the Sleepy's version for about 40% of Tempurpedic.
I was annoyed the smell for a while but it faded quickly, like 2 weeks, though to be honest it was bothersome enough that I'd hate to get one in winter when I couldn't ventilate as easily.
I you are very chemically sensitive you might find it less than agreable. It's probably no worse than the average mattress though, which ALSO contains fire retardent treatments and "other" chemicals.
Since then I've slept well on it. I didn;t find it noticeably warmer than other mattresses, but I also have another sheet or thin wool blanket under me which does wonders for it feeling less foam-damp if my duvet is a little too hot.
We purchased our Tempurpedic two months ago. We got the newer Rhapsody. I wasn't sure for the first 2 days, but now my wife and I absolutely love it. We wake up so refreshed. It has even helped my bad shoulder while sleeping. I used to move all night long. I would definately recommend looking into it. Also a friend of mine helped me get a good deal from a small store. If you call Mattress America they can give you extras like free shipping and pillows. Also out of state you save the sales tax so it's even better to buy this way. We did this and they were very helpful. Ask for the manager Keith. Their number is 1-888-375-3379. Also I wouldn't suggest the new Original Tempurpedic bed. My cousin got this one and it's very hard. He exchanged it for the Deluxed Tempurpedic and now he loves it.
If you buy the lower end Tempur-pedic (original) it does not have the airflow chambers the more expensive versions have and may sleep "hot". The misconception is that the foam holds the heat - the reality is the bed is improving circulation in the body by relieving pressure and you are actually hotter!

Have saved for years and just bought a tempur pedic allura "sleep system". Although the salesman told me that there might be a slight odor, I was flummoxed to discover how cloying and deep the smell actually was. It has been almost a week and there is still a significant odor that permeates thru the sheets, blankets, etc. I have opened the windows at 32 degrees and run a ceiling fan, but it is really hard to sleep and often I wake up coughing.
The mattress is also significantly harder than the wonderful one I laid on in the store. I stopped by Sleepys and asked the salesman if this odor would end and the mattress would get softer. He assured me both the smell would dissipate and the mattress would get more comfortable. I also called customer service at the Tempurpedic home office. The person told me to put an ozone machine or an air purifier in there as well - cha ching...too expensive - So everyday I strip the bed, tromp around on it with my Uggs on (to break up the cells, thus releasing the chemical off gasses) turn on the fan and open the windows. So far I am keeping the faith but stay tuned.
