Top Shops 2006: Best New Arrival?

12-5-topshops.jpgLast year we asked you for your fave shops in different categories so that we could uncover the TRUTH, congratulate great shops and hopefully discover a few secret shops we didn't know about. It's that time again.

Who is your top new arrival out of these four?

Fresh Kills
Z Gallerie
Amaridian
Ochre

i'd like to nominate the design*sponge shop as the best newcomer of the year!

always keeping an eye on design trends in brooklyn, she's expanded to bring us the best independent designers from around the country (and world)!

I don't really think it qualifies as a shop but cribcandy.com is an interesting site.

It's a collection of pics/links to items available from all around the net.

Can't wait to see the new list, it sure makes sifting through all the stores easier.

I'd like to nominate ZGallerie as the best new home furnishings shop. Nice, high quality, innovative and creative stuff at reasonable prices. I've been shopping at their stores in South Florida for several years and now finally they have opened a store in Soho.

I would have to say OCHRE. I just can't help it.

I would like to nominate AMARIDIAN in Soho for a fresh look at African art and design in a sophisticated contemporary fashion - take a look it will change your perceptions of African style!

Well.. let's not forget Poaa.com. They also ship to the US and Canada at TAX FREE prices and they offer some great designs!

Worth a look.

I love Fresh Kills. Those guys have impeccable taste.

I went to Ochre yesterday and bought the white globe- thanks Maxwell!...

It is really quite a great store - picks up where Nicole Fahri's mini design emporium left off with the muted/natural modern feel

If only Z Gallerie didn't steal designs from other artists and knock them off to sell in their stores! Unfortunately, it seems to be common and accepted practice.

I agree with Brian. Fresh Kills is my favorite. Even though a lot of things are out of my price range, it's still the best place to go if you just want to fantasize and get inspired. Maybe one day . . .

Z Gallerie's chief drawback is that it doesn't take returns on sale merchandise. That's ridiculous.

Z Gallerie is a suburban chain that first appeared in places like Palo Alto, Sacramento, and Tempe. I'm amazed that the Manhattanites are drooling over something we've had in fly-over land for years, where most of the stock seems to be aimed at helping McMansion owners feel that they haven't fully betrayed their urban hipness for the sake of a garage for the SUV.

Please tell me NYC can do better than Z Gallerie!

I agree Wende. Z seems to be a cross between Domain and CB2. They have a good selection of framed prints but other than that it seems like a bunch of poorly made chachka (I have no idea how to spell that). Oh, and I think it started out in Berkeley.

Fresh Kills takes the cake. The owners have a phenomenal knowledge of designer goods and also know how to party!
