10 Favorite Nautical Accessories

It's going to be a whooping 80 degrees in New York this weekend. We thought it might be an appropriate time to take a look at all things nautical. We recognize that unless you own a beach house (and if you do, can we be friends?), a little nautical can go a long way. Do you have a favorite here? We're not usually big Pottery Barn consumers, but we sure love those flags!

I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and my father always flew the cocktail flag from the mast on our skipjack!

Unfortunately, the Pottery Barn flags are not correct, and neither are the Wisteria pillows. As a grad from a Maritime Academy, I think it would be better to display flags that have actual meaning rather than something that "looks" good. There are some good ones on ebay, but they're pricey.

The doorstop is nice, but it's really simple to make once you have the hang of the knot down - my brother made me one out of a ball bearing and a couple bucks worth of rope.

I agree with Ruth. Nonsense nautical flags are cringe-inducing. They're almost as bad as made-up Chinese characters. Don't use them if you don't know what they mean.

I know ebay has some. I got ones from Land of Nod a while back and they're much cooler. I don't know about them being correct, though...

If I were going to hang flags, they would actually have to say something or could be interchangeable to give a correct status message....as in a real ship.
