Best IKEA Classics 2009

8-5-finalkea.jpg

IKEA continues to create new designs (Awesome IKEA at ICFF 2009 list here), but it's the evergreen classics that we buy the most of — designs that stand the test of time and become staples in our offices and homes.

In order to document those that I feel are the "best of class" classics (which I also hope IKEA doesn't discontinue), I put together this list for today. All of these below are designs that I've purchased and recommended countless times. Got your own faves? Tell everyone below in the comments.

>> Billy Bookcase - Hey, it's the 30th Anniversary of this seminal, affordable design, which has invited a host of makeover and hack add-ons.

>> Kulla Floor, Table and Pendant Lamp - Often out of stock, this lamp is a crowd favorite and a perfectly serviceable copy of the Sebastian Wrong SPUN lamp that costs over $2k.

>> Frosta Stool - based on the really classic design by Alvar Aalto, the Frosta is a simple, flexible design that can double as stool or table.

>> Vika Legs
- designed by Olle Lundberg, I like these legs more than any other that IKEA sells. They are chic, strong and don't look like IKEA.

>> PS cabinet metal locker - ubiquitous in our house tours and reader's homes, the PS series picks up on the vintage metal locker fad and translates it into a line that has many uses and doesn't stand out too much.

>> Pronomen Counter Top - this solid beech counter top is extremely affordable, comes in many lengths, is cuttable and can be nicely aged with oil. I recommend these for tables and desks as well as counter top.

3-21--ikea.jpg

>> Patrik Swivel Chair - who needs an Aeron, when the Patrik can comfortably outfit your home or office for much, much less. A little hard on the seat (adding a cushion helps), the shape is classic mid-century modern and the whole thing is durable.

>> Expedit Bookcase - a fabulous copy of the much more expensive Conran orginal, Expedit is great for any kind of storage and/or creating walls in loft-like spaces. Look for new sizes and colors this year!

10-23-knappa.jpg

>> Knappa Pendant Lamp
- another great and more recent rip off of a good design, the Knappa pops up almost everywhere.

>> Grundtal Kitchen Hardware - these have been around for years (thank God!) and can be used all over the house. I've used them in outdoor showers, kitchens, bathrooms, you name it. The Grundtal series is a good example of "building blocks" in that it can be used in many different ways.

>> Ribba Frames - I forgot to add these to the email, but these simple wooden frames come in many sizes, are great basics and work well in multiples. Wood frames can get really expensive, these are not.

Those Billys are great- I inherited some I had when I was a girl, then some the my parents got when I was a teenager, then we bought a 1/2 size one for more apt. storage- they ALL go together so nicely still!! And at the risk of getting burned at the stake- I'd add that ridiculous Poang chair. We got one in college when we needed a reading chair & couldn't find one anywhere else and I still love it...

I don't see the Pronomen countertop or the Vika Inge legs being offered on the Ikea website any longer.

What is your suggested alternative now?

I love the Ribba frames. And the Knappa lamp. And the Patrik chair. I may just have to add the Patrik chair to my actual list of things to buy. Ikea has some super versatile pieces, as long as you don't buy them all -- no one wants to look like a catalog!

I went to a store the other day to get a pronomen countertop and it was discontinued.

Okaaaay, but I have to defend my beloved Aeron chair. It's worth every penny, considering how much it saves on chiropractor bills.

There is another table top made of beech in the VIKA line right now, as well as a pine one on the website. Not sure how they compare in size since I never looked at the Pronomen.

Yeah, I wanted Pronomen for my kitchen that I redid just last month and it was discontinued. I had to go with the more expensive, all be it thicker Numerar counter top.

If you really want something that has the same thickness as the pronomen, Vika Bysek table top is a good alternative.

ahh the Billy bookcase. A personal favorite. That along with the Expedit bookcase. The price is right and it is a definite classic.
