Best Products: Frosta Stool by Gillis Lundgren

11-30-gillis.jpg

We started using them in the office for extra seating and they have now gravitated into our home. The Frosta Stool by Gillis Lundgren (who is credited with the invention of flat-pack furniture) is a dead simple Ikea classic that we've found works easily as a stool or side table...

It fits quietly into a variety of decors, is super cheap ($1912.99) and can be customized with paint, lacquer or padding to hide its mild Ikea-ness. Our only question is did this design really originate with Gillis or did he copy if from somewhere else?

It's based on Alvar Aalto's E60 stool design, designed in the early 1930s.

The "original" is still available from Herman Miller: http://www.hermanmiller.com/hm/content/product/miscellaneous/Aalto_stools.pdf

There's also a three-legged version which stacks beautifully.

"I thought I saw this in a Ikea catalog?"

Do people READ these posts before commenting?

Why do the photos from the GR home always have that warm glow? Is it the wall color?

I am shocked that Maxwell did not know that stool is a complete knock-off of the Aalto stool. However, at one-tenth the price, it's a good alternative. Oh, similar stools used to also be available at Target for about $15.

It's the lighting, Pixie.

The wall color doesn't hurt, but in the book, Maxwell recommends considerably more -- and more strategic -- lighting than most people think to use. I'm pretty sure that's what's making the difference.

Thanks wende. I wonder if it's the camera as well.

I find these stools uncomfortable to sit on as the leg bit that sticks out gets in the way - I don't understand why the circle on top can't be the same size and the leg footprint

Did Aalto design the four-legged version? I thought Maxwell was referring to if someone else created a knock-off version before Gillis.
Anyways, I have two dark-stained versions of this, one is a guest room table and one is in my kitchen and functions as a stool and a stepstool. I like them, I got mine for $10 a piece at Target.

am hoping to find a stool that is 22 - 24 inches high. Any suggestions?

FWIW, a few of the signature IKEA pieces are knock offs. The Poang chair is another Aalto knock off:

i've seen the target stools in person, and i agree that they are not bad. a good alternative for those of us who (sadly) are no where near an IKEA.
