Best Products: Pyrex Glass Bowls

07.23.pyrex.jpg

They were good enough for mom. And now we love these plain old clear glass nesting bowls by Pyrex. They are simple in design and fit into any decor - we use them in our modern home and mom has them in her country home. They're great for prep work and we even use the large one for serving on occassion.

They're always cheap and readily available. Get the 3-piece set (1-qt., 1.5-qt. and 2.5-qt) at Amazon for only 10 bucks.

Best deal ever.

They're great for the microwave too.

There is some scientific evidence to suggest that substances used to manufacture plastic products may leach out of the container and into the food it holds, and that some of them may be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

I have a multicolor 3pc set that I've had since the late 80's or so that is like the clears ones above and I have an old vintage 50's 4pc Pyrex colorware set that I bought at an estate sale years ago too. The vintage 50's era set is of the milk white glass.

A lot of really good condition colorware stuff is now quite collectable and do command a bit of change these days.

I have that 3 piece clear set, and they're almost all I ever use. I do have a few pieces from the older colored sets that my mom and grandma have. Just seeing them in my cupboard brings smiles and memories.

I know they're supposed to handle tehandlemp fluctuations, but can they really take super hot things without cracking? Soups? Hot pastas?

Williams Sonoma has a set of 10 glass nesting bowls that I've always thought was the best deal in the store. I love them.

Actually, temp fluctuations is bad. Going from hot to cold or the other way is what will cause these bowls to shatter/break. Taking heat though is what these things can do! You can boil water in them if you want. You can apply open flame, and they will be no worse for the wear. It's the same stuff that lab glass is made out of, and think of everything those vessels can handle.

... the bowls, that is. Not the store!

I loved Pyrex till I dropped one, and it didn't just break - it EXPLODED all over my kitchen. A million tiny shards. With a dog in the house, this didn't make me happy. I now love my nested melamine bowls from Crate and Barrel a whole lot more. You can't microwave them, but it's very rare I need to microwave anything I'd put in a mixing bowl.

I'd be careful with an open flame on the pyrex. Been there, done that and it didn't go well. My container fractured releasing oozing contents down into the burner. Ewwwwww factor very high in this instance.

One exploded in my oven, and now I only use them with the solar cooker. It just about ruined my (rental's) stove, and it certainly shattered my nerves.

We talked about Pyrex bowls shattering a little while back at the Kitchen - you do have to watch out for hot/cold extremes with them...

I love my Pyrex bowls! They were a staple in my parent's and my grandmother's house for as long as I can remember. For Mixing or making a big salad for the family or a big salad for one. They were my first kitchen purchase when I moved out and have had them ever since.

Sea mentioned above the Williams-Sonoma set of 10 Pyrex nesting bowls. We have the set and love it. It is particularly useful when you are preparing a dish that has a lot of ingredients that need to be chopped and prepared ahead and added separately in various stages. The tiny bowls are great for a few cloves of chopped garlic or herbs.

Having all the ingredients neatly prepared and contained in just the right size bowl makes food preparation feel much more organized.

And from a materials science standpoint, these are probably the most technologically advanced object you have in your kitchen.
