Best Products: Radio Shack Wireless Light Switch

2004_10_25_radio.jpgAre your lights hard to turn on? We find that many of our clients live in darkness because they have lights that they never get to.

We often recommend more lights to clients only to watch their faces fall as they contemplate having to work their way aroung their apartment looking for small switches on cords. We have been using this handy little device from Radio Shack - Wireless RF Remote-Control On/Off Switch - for the past few years to solve the problem.

You plug the box into the wall and then plug your light into the box. From anywhere in your apartment you can now turn that light on with a press of a button. We recommend using extension cords or surge protectors off of these to put more lights into them. They come in three frequencies (A,B,C) so that you can put your living room on a different switch from your bedroom. Available at a href="http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103886&cp=&origkw=Wireless+Light+Switch&kw=wireless+light+switch&parentPage=search">Radio Shack for $9.97 each - which is amazing price drop from the regular $26.

does anyone know of a similar wireless switch that looks like a normal switch and can be mounted in a wall? Thanks in advance.

I use the X-10 Switches, where you can do multiple lights/appliances from a single remote. Same premise, but allows you to dim and other neat stuff. Works really good for the Christmas Tree...

this is a stupid question, but once you install this, can the lamp ONLY be turned on/off via this keychain device?

now I'm confused: the radio shack thing is to turn lamps on/off with a remote. Does it have a dimmer? Does lutron make a remote with a dimmer?

We use this Radio Shack remote switch/dimmer at our CT condo:

The switch can be wall mounted(but we prefer its portability) -- and more important, can also work as a dimmer. We have been VERY hapPy with it!

I have a similar product and use it for tablelamps in my bedroom. Seemed like a better option than "The Clapper".

I use timers for the lamps in my main living so the lamps go on and off automatically. It keeps the place looking lived in when I am gone...but mostly, I just like coming home to a bright, cheery space instead of a dark one.

I use this wireless X10 switch to control my kitchen undercabinet lights. X10 switches work by cutting off the power to your lights, so the only way to turn on/off your lights is by this, or another X10 switch somewhere else.

The Smarthome switch (by WBGuy) is exactly the same as the Radio Shack item I linked above.

The $125 lucite box from unicahome is cute in an artsy way, but I don't do Lucite in my home, and I'd rather have the difference in $ for a nice meal and wine in my beautifully lit abode!!!

Smarthome is the way to go. But I say go for their new Insteon stuff. It still works with X10 but is more reliable.

I use it all over my apartment. One really cool thing you can do is link multiple switches together. This will allow you to turn on and off many lights with just one switch.

I love programming scenes using Insteon and X10. With scenes you can have multiple lights turn on/off or brighten/dim simultaneously. For instance, in my home theater I have a "seating" scene where the sconces and overhead light all come on to preset levels. The "movie scene" dimms all the lights down to 0% over 4 seconds. The "intermission" scene brings the sconces up to a warm glow over 2 seconds.

You can always get a wireless light switch that also requires no batteries from Ad Hoc Electronics. The switches have energy harvesters in them and generate enough electricity to send a radio signal to a relay/receiver that switches the lights on and off. Their website is www.adhocelectronics.com
