Spike Coin & Receipt Holder

04.30.spike.jpg

Okay, tax season is over but those daily receipts and bills can still get away from you if you don't have a system. And what better way than the traditional old receipt holder like the Spike coin and receipt holder by Touch of Ginger?

It's a stamped aluminum tray with a spike at its center. The tray is shaped to hold your spare change and the spike, well, it spears your receipts and bills until you can get to them. We have a notebook that we stuff receipts into, but this, we think, is much better. Sells in the UK and ships to the US.

In "The Adding Machine" the guy kills his boss with one of those. I was in a little production of that at my college, and I think I'd have a hard time having one of those in my home.

When I was a teenager, I worked in a store where we had a spike for receipts. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but I find these scary now.

They scare me, too, though I am attracted by the efficiency.

I have a system. It is called the trash can system.

any other suggestion for keeping important receipts? rather than. you know, archie's storing them in the trashcan or my storing them in assorted drawers.

That's no spike! That's a spindle -- as in "fold, spindle or mutilate"!

I keep my receipts in a small expanding file. Very handy if you have a lot of deductible expenses to keep track of.

I like this - much better than my current 'shove it in a drawer approach' and would buy it if I didn't have to order it from England. Jeez, with the exchange rate the way it is plus shipping this is going to be one expensive piece of metal.

This kind of thing seems pretty familiar - or at least familiar in a days gone by kind of a way. What would be interesting is if anyone out there knows where to find something like this in the US.

Rich is correct - it is a spindle. And with a very quick google search I was able to find a couple here in the US (of course, there is nothing wrong with ordering it from england except the current exchange rate)

The classic office max version for $1.99 is lacking a tray http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?

Two historic options from Ruby Lane in San Fransisco for $10 or $15 plus shipping ...

And two on ebay currently bidding at about $7 ....

I gotta say, Regina, you are never allowed near my credit card because you are not a shopper.

Alex - you're not allowed near my design decisions! ;-P

Regina's is practical (my husband always ends up with lots of change at the end of the day so the tray is handy) and the lines are really great. Although an antique one might have a better story, this one would fit in my home far better, even if it costs more--it's both practical and beautiful.

P.S. I do agree with the problem with the exchange rate these days!

Kate,
I agree that the designs are different and that the piece link is attractive in an industrial kind of a way, but at $30 before shipping - Yikes!!
My google search wasted about two minutes of my time. It seems that little more effort would probably reveal much better options on this side of the pond.
I've gotten spoiled here at AT with the quality of the posts (as well as the quality of the comments). My comments to Regina are specific to the sense that I am getting that she posts ANYTHING she finds attractive online with what appears to be little thought or research. (oh, pretty!! .... post with pithy comments) Yeah, probably harsh on my part - and I apologize if I have hurt feelings. My intent is constructive - Perhaps less posts with more thought/research would be more valuable to us all. For example - posting several spindle solutions at different price points including the one above would be a more interesting discussion about the idea.
