Less is more. We got our hands on the next issue of Domino yesterday via an inside source and discovered that this one is being printed two ways. Those smartie pants up at Cond Nast are experimenting with a new stripped down, less marked up (more attractive) cover (on right) for those that subscribe...
For example, on the left up top you see this month's cover with all the extra crap all over it. On the right is the new cleaned up cover that reads much more elegantly. Only subscribers will get the nice cover, the busy format will still be found on newstands.
Now, if they'd only do away with the silly handwriting and the awful Domino band of color up top and set the words against the beautiful photo, but then again, we're not cover experts and you might not be able to read that from 20 feet away.
I saw both covers on the newstand yesterday.

marketing baby, marketing. makes sense to me subscribers are the captured audience.

I think your "inside source" gave you bad information.
I'm a Domino subscriber, and I've had this issue (with the cover on the left) for several weeks now...it's been out for a while. The same cover (the one on the left) has definitely also been on the newsstands in NYC for at least two weeks. I haven't seen the cover on the right yet, but its use doesn't seem to have anything to do with subscriber or newsstand.

I don't care either way. But it would be great if they deep-sixed the color band. You could read that domino if it were black or something from across the passage. Other mags do it very well.

The one on the left is the April issue. I'm a subscriber too and have had this one for awhile. I checked the newstand today and saw the new "May" issue is out now. What's so busy about the April cover? I always think Domino's covers are beautiful!

The one on the left is the April issue and the one on the right is the May issue. May just came out on the newstand yesterday.
view Mistral418's profile
Thanks, Robin, that explains it! These are two completely different issues, April and May. I'll check the newsstands on my way to the train tonight and see if the display covers match that on the copy that is (hopefully) waiting for me in my mailbox at home.

busy, messy, overdone (old version)...they could learn a thing or two from Dwell's simple design.

the one on the left is the april issue, and to my knowledge has been on newsstands since end of March...

The thing I don't like about the cover on the right is that the woman is the focus, not the decor. I prefer the busier cover and I don't mind the color bar behind the title - it makes the magazine more recognizeable.

Thanks for the heads-up. I am good for buying 2 copies of the same issue because the cover looks different (dur!)

I'm pretty sure they're two sep. issues, right? April on the left, May on the right? I prefer May's cover but I'm pretty sure it's not a special edition, just a new month.

Cool, I should be receiving my issue in the mail pretty soon.
Can't say I like the new May cover. I guess I would need to have a better look at it first. I don't understand why they always have to have a woman posing on the cover (yes I'm a female).
Never figured this out yet with Domino since I'm a first-year subscriber. Are they directed more towards a home decorating magazine for women or what?

I subscribe, but I got the version on the left... blah...

I work in the design field and I usually love Domino but I got the May issue yesterday and was not impressed. It was kind of boring. But maybe that's because I live in NYC and have no need for articles about outdoor space.
view Mistral418's profile
yeah, um still not getting it. these are 2 different months, not two different versions.

obviously, if you subscribe to DOMINO, the cover must not matter THAT much to you. whine whine whine.
pass me the "i want this" sticky page markers.

They have so many cute boys *in* the mag (like the April issue), why can't they ever have cute boys ON the mag?
It's okay when the woman they feature is actually a designer or something, but last month it was a freakin' model!
I don't care about pretty ladies, I care about pretty THINGS!

Ditto!!

This rag is looking too much like fashion mags, focusing on people on the cover, not on design. This magazine used to be really great until about 4 months ago when it just plummeted. What happened?
view Bryan Hale's profile
I agree with Bryan - every month it gets dumb and dumber. Really ugly rooms full of oddball ethno-crap or some 25 yr old spoiled girl's way over the top enormous NYC apartment. If I see one more "dressing room" for a skinny WASP, I'll scream Unfortunately, my subscription goes on for years...
view sfgirl's profile
hmm, i subscribe to domino, but i always seem to get my magazine a few days after it comes out on the newsstand. what gives? anyway, i agree w/ sfgirl on the "dressing rooms". they're driving me a little crazy! it reminds me that domino is not necessarily dedicated to us small-spacers!

sfgirl--
Ha, my friend and I bitched about that 25 yr old spoiled girl and her apartment for about an hour when that came out!
view palousian's profile
hmmm....i like the old cover. i feel like the new cover focuses way too much on the girl and looks too generic real simple / martha stewart clean and i'm not really sure what i'm looking at here. and yeah, totally agree, what is up with the fact that they were having female interior designers on the cover, which rocked, and now they've suddenly gone to models? what i like about domino is that it's mish mashy messy casual and not every apt looks like the same person decorated it -- which is why i like the handwriting and the old cover -- and i hope they don't lose that vibe.

I didn't mind the new issue. Love the "Bombay in Brooklyn" but then, I would. "Blueprint" was more enjoyable overall though.
view Lady J's profile
The issue on the left is April 07 and the issue on the right is May 07.
Did anyone catch the latest Blueprint May/June 07 issue? White with lots of pink. It's gorgeous. I'm with LadyJ, the "Bombay in Brooklyn" article really inspired. I wanted to run out and purchase fabric and go to town!
Speaking of mags... Anyone read fashion mag "Lulu" from England? Their latest issue #4 is my favorite so far. "Heart of the Matter" and "Daisies in the Dust" were my favorites. You could easily clip and frame some of the amazing fashion photography in this catalog of a magazine. I'm a huge Zooey Deschanel fan, so I was pleased to see lots of great pics of her.

I really enjoyed the last issue of Blueprint so I'll have to look for the May/June issue.
Holly, I'm curious to know where you found the Lulu magazine. Thanks!

The last issue of Domino supposedly had some hints on reorganizing your closet... then the article was of a woman who had done an expansive and expensive closet renovations. Sure, I would like shelves and shelves to display my shoes, but how about something realistic. This is why Apt Therapy is my fave design resource... it shows for real homes. I also like Design Sponge, and the apartment article that sometime appears in Bust. Still, I will continue to purchase Domino as well as Lucky... can't help it.
view Bittersweet's profile
I think there is almost no point to the writing on the cover because most times it is really not obvious where the "budget makeover" or the "12 tips for whatever" are located... and like bittersweet states the mag claims to have tips and ideas on a budget but wind up showing very specific and unrealistic renovations. Now don't get me wrong, I love reading about the designed expensive stuff but don't mislead me into thinking I'll find some thrifty and useful tip!
view labchick's profile
I loved the "spoiled girl's apartment", but I'm inspired by how a room looks, regardless of how much money it cost. If they did it on a budget that is great. I think the magazine has gotten better every issue.

Despite the fact that the images above are posted in error, as noted above, it did remind me to run out and buy the new issue. I really liked the section on Josef Hoffman - completely yummy!! Love, love love Sessionists and was happy to see someone trying to apply some of the ideas to current interior tastes.
