Blogging Dwell: February 2007

(In this new feature - a little guerilla mediawatch - various editors across our sites are choosing their favorite design magazine and blogging the crap out of it so as to give you a flavor of what's inside before you buy.)

01-19-dwell.jpgThe current issue of Dwell zeroes in on the craft of design by visiting handcrafting designers in their places of work, from a Berkeley studio to rural Netherlands.

Meet Your Maker is the issue's main feature, highlighting makers emphasizes handcrafted design. We really loved the piece on felt maker Claudy Jongstra. She has collaborated with the likes of Tord Boontje and Rem Koolhaas from her rural sheep farm and studio.

• The feature Off the Grid brings us Well Thawed Out, an overview of the LA home of Icelandic natives Tryggvi Thorsteinsson and Erla Dogg Ingjaldsdottir. The home, built around "what was essentially a teardown", is their first trip into the world of sustainable home design. What they've done is inspiring because it breaks out of the typical "look" of sustainability.

Dwell Reports rates the best wall clocks in How Soon Is Now?. We here at AT did it back in October! Compare their list with ours and you'll see a little overlap.

• A tidbit from In the Modern World points out a new book on Heath Ceramics. The book, entitled Heath Ceramics: The Complexity of Simplicity, highlights Edith Heath's work and its far-reaching influence.

It used to be that I couldn't wait to read Dwell when I got it in the mail. Now it collects dust until I make myself read it, which this one is doing. In fact, I have several months of them cooling their heels. I probably won't renew and am very disappointed, because it used to be my fave. LivingEtc is Mag 1 for me now.

Sadly, Dwell changed from writing about innovative architecture and design to multi-million dollar showcases. The spirit of the whole publication changed, and now it's downright depressing to read about people living in beautiful homes, who haven't contributed anything of their own to the design anyway. Now Dwell is just bunch of pages with no soul.

ouch @ mike.
but I am in agreement, I've stopped reading.

I'm pretty sure I have every issue ever though, from the launch through now I've lugged them hundreds of miles and ended up in a very traditional home.

anyone interested in these? I might try the university here first, and i don't really want to think about shipping costs. I was just wondering if there is any interest out there.
