apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Blogging Dwell: May 2007

Everyone's doing it. AT has always said that small is cool. During this Smallest Coolest Apartment Month at AT, we couldn't help but notice Dwell's Smaller is Smarter May issue. Standouts are after the jump.

First off, David and Im's Onespace (pictured above) is on the cover. Their 426 sf loft in San Diego tied for first place in last year's Smallest Coolest Apartment Contest. See Dwell's take on their place here.

Also check out La Tour des Bebelles - an off-the-grid house made up of two 450sf spaces stacked on top of one another. The small vacation home, designed by architects Andre Lessard and Barbara Dewhirst, is a fine example of living small and living green.

The Haute Seat is a Dwell Report on plastic seating with expert opinion from - who else? - Karim Rashid.

There's lots more to see here, particularly with regard to beautiful and functional small homes. This is a good, dense issue that's caught our full attention.

I think it's pretty cool, but dusting those kitchen shelves must be a nightmare.

Why and how are those chairs staying on the wall?

go back and look at David and Im's AT contest entry from last year -- the pictures are MUCH more beautiful than this one.

Is it just me? I've looked at all the pics, I've read the articles, I've reviewed the comments, again and again... yes, it's a beautiful renovation on very limited space with very limited materials — I do love what they did with the books — but how long would you really want to live/eat/sleep there?

This space continues to amaze me with its functionality, use of space, and modern beauty.

I think it's amazing, I'd gladly live there in a second!

While reading the article, I got the same feeling of anxiety I get when I watch shows about insects. I think the writer of the article was feeling something similar. He did, after all, reference Rain Man and the unibomber (in a good way, he said, whatever that means) when describing the apartment and its creators.

I, for one, preferred the story that came after this one about the woman who gutted her condo down to the concrete and more or less left it unfinished. Now that's my kind of crazy.

I think that is hideously cluttered. Would drive me mad.

But I loved David and Im's apartment on here. However, did not even recognize it from that shot.
