My parents' wall of family photos at their home is a mish mash of old and new, formal portraits and snapshots - all framed and squeezed onto one wall. The sight of it is probably only a pleasure to our family as we see old memories dispite the disarray. With our own young family, we want to display family photos at home in a way that everyone can appreciate. While we here at AT have lots of useful info on hanging artwork in groups, we found this helpful guide from Real Simple on displaying family photos in particular...
- Unify the grouping by framing black and whites in black frames with white matting.
- Use oversized matting around small snapshots for a more artful look.
- Space frames no more than 1" apart in groupings.
- Tape larger photos directly to the wall. Center a rectangle of glass over each photo and secure it to the wall by hammering a small nail directly underneath and above it.
- Use colorful, layered mats on school portraits to add a bit of artfulness.
- Frame a bulletin board in an ornate, white-painted frame. Tack up loose photos within the frame for a casual, ever-changing display of recent family photos.

I've scanned most of my family photos and use them in a Kodak picture frame for anyone who really really wants to see :). I have NO room in my 800 sq ft apt. plus I carry their memories in my heart so while I don't necessarily need to look at them, guest 'might' , hence the digital photo frame

that's what i love about artwork/photos, they're on your walls so it never matters how large or small your square footage is! then again, i keep acquiring larger frames and prints so that won't really help me with this...
