Contemporary Escapes. It's near the end of Escapes Month and we're going to squeeze in an interesting piece from the Art & Design section of the New York TimesNew Houses on an Old Land explores the proportionately-large number of architects designing and building residences on the North Fork of Long Island. Architects Richard Gluckman, Bill Ryall, Hideaki Ariizumi and Glynis M. Berry have all made homes here...

Lovely, but I wouldn't mind seeing inside, too...

Absolutely beautiful, have long been a fan of the modern architecture of eastern Long Island...

THe NYT has broken new ground with this, it's 39th straight weekly profile of what is essentially the same house. Squareish? Check. Glass? Check. Unexpectedly modern? Check.

Wow, that fourth picture looks like Pee Wee's playhouse on steroids! I can't say that I am particularly liking the use of cedar shakes on a modern residence; it's just... disconcerting. And Greeps, there is no way you could call this square-ish and glassy!

The last house is GORGEOUS! And the stairs will help to ensure a nice, firm caboose over time...

I do think it's a shame that houses like these are still largely built by/for architects. But I suppose they are the ones who have to lead by example to get us out of the McMansion syndrome...

Another observation I have made recently... are blooming plants/flowers considered verboten in the modern context? All I see is grass, rocks a bush here and there or perhaps some heather. What's so wrong with a little bit of color?
