Food so local that it comes from the building next door? The New York Times examines the idea of vertical farming in urban centers and shows us that architects, designers and agriculturalists are fascinated with the possibility of creating sustainable urban farms. The vertical farm pictured above is a concept design for Paris...

Dr. Dickson Despommier, of Columbia University, developed the idea for the Vertical Farm Project in 1999 with a group of his graduate students. Now, Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer has plans to pitch a feasibility study in the near future. Check it out: Country, the City Version: Farms in the Sky Gain New Interest . And don't miss the slideshow, Towers of Food, with even more pictures of vertical farming concepts.

"architects, designers and agriculturalists"
Yeah, kind of what I thought. Call me when they add "civil engineers" to the list of people being consulted on this concept. Then it might gain some level of plausibility.

I think its absolutely fantastic that there is even a possibility for this to happen.
Although i cant seem to get the vision out of my head - all that polluted city air grown those crops... plus im wondering just how 'green' running an urban farm will be...
just trying to be realistic! Dont mean to be Debbie downer!
