Comments: Canal Street Legwork Pays Off

2004_12_16_canal.jpgThis just in.

...a couple years ago I bought an all-in-one washer-dryer (condensing type dryer)- I did a lot of research online, made a bunch of calls and then hit the strip of appliance stores on Canal street and haggled. Buying online can be great, but I walked into these stores and was able to negotiate total cost- tax, delivery (up 3 flights of stairs) etc.

It was one day of legwork, that was completely worth while, because there weren't any hidden costs.

Research online, buy local. Good advice. Can you tell us where exactly on Canal?? (Thanks, Carolyn!) MGR

I would have to go home and search for my receipt to figure out where exactly I bought my washer/dryer.
I called around, then hit the bricks on a weekend and went in face to face a couple places along Canal on the Lower East Side- there are also some places along Essex and Grand that are probably worth checking out as well.

I am going to make the disclaimer that there are NOT fancy places, very no frills. I went in knowing exactly what I wanted (Model number etc.) and they pulled out catalogs and told me if they had it in stock, if they could order it, how long it would take, what it would cost etc. I knew what it would cost buying it online, plus delivery, tax etc. and had a "bottom line" number in mind. The place that I bought from came in under that including delivery and tax and then told me to check all of the other places because they knew they couldn't be beat. I will try and dig up that receipt today.
I wouldn't go into these places browsing- it's not Best Buy or P.C. Richards, but they are great places to get a deal if you know exactly what you want, also I think that the delivery went much more smoothly, because the guys knew in advance it was a 4th floor walk-up and they were very accomodating in my request for a weekend delivery.
