In this week's Shopping With... feature from The New York Times, designer Kelly Wearstler visits Potterton Books in Los Angeles and shares her tips and resources for finding out-of-print design books. Some of her picks are inspiring and the prices are not all insane...

This book on bathroom design from 1931 was one of the more expensive picks at $100. Potterton Books also has a Manhattan location on Third Avenue near 59th Street. Check out her choices in design books: Shopping for Hard-to-Find Design Books With Kelly Wearstler.

Also be sure to search abebooks.com -- it's a site that lets scores (hundreds? thousands?) of used booksellers post their entire inventories, in searchable form. Search for titles, authors, keywords, dates of pub, etc.... and then you can even comparison-shop for the best prices among available editions. GREAT site!

Go to a private university library and ask what their lending policy is. At the university where I work -- non students can get library cards for a fee ($150 for six months). Expensive? Maybe for some people --- but you would be amazed at what we have in our collection.
