So she's jumping on board the schoolhouse bandwagon. What a visionary.

I agree. Like I have said before, I think Kelly is sometimes more interested in modeling, than presenting her designs. She mostly 'tweaks' past trends.

I like that first room though. It's so delicate and airy. I like the pieces.

I never get why she's such a big deal. Her stuff always looks messy to me including the above (except #2, where she manages to make blue and green look bad together). #1 is kind of cute, but too crowded.

huh... never heard of her, and after going to her website, big thumbs down. Doesn't seem to original, no one really is though... I didn't think blue and green could look horrible, but she did a great job at that one!

Generally not a fan, but the room at The Tides in Miami is sort of nice...I'd definitely have to remove some of the larger than life things, tho.

Dana Goodyear, who wrote the New Yorker article, is an excellent reporter based in Los Angeles. I follow her stuff both online and in the magazine. I look forward to what she has to say about Kelly Weastler. Personally, I would prefer to read a take on the sorry state of California politics and economy, but a writer goes with a story the editors want. Anyway, go, Dana!

It's hard to pigeon-hole Kelly Wearstler, in my opinion. I also don't quite get why she is a design super-star. But I am willing to read about her, see her designs and learn.

I was extremely adverse to what I saw as Jonathan Adler's commercialism, and some poor quality and overpriced merchandise really turned me off. Then I found myself greatly amused by some of his designs, and bought two trays which were on sale. Now I am coveting his $75 candle-holder of a sensuous female hand holding a cup. So converts to a particular designer can always be found.

I think it's hilarious that she's a Playboy centerfold.

I'm not impressed with her. She manages to choose the worst trends from the 50s, 60s etc and dumps them into one room without any concept (and bad wall treatments!).

I am so over this designer. Her work is only so-so. I've stayed at the Santa Monica hotel she designed. I like Shutters on the Beach MUCH better. She's just not that original. Regency influences leave me cold.

Her design style really reflects her personal style... HOT MESS, minus the hot!

Meow!
It's interesting that we feel entitled to spit venom at someone who's rich and famous but I've never seen this kind of bitch fest about a less than great house tour.
I think I smell some class envy.

aw, man, everyone hates her? i love kelly! sure, she has some rooms i don't like, but so does every designer. her commercial work, in particular, is great. i think she's very editorial, which works best in hotel and restaurant projects. her restaurant in bloomingdales is amazing, and i looove the tides. she creates major atmosphere.

bottom line, she goes for it. i don't care if she's innovating, as long as she's making beautiful rooms. i'm not a fan of her fashion posing on top design, but the important thing is her work, and i love most of it.

"... but I've never seen this kind of bitch fest about a less than great house tour."

Are you new around here? I'm continually amazed at how nasty and petty the comments can get on some house tours.

Not entitled Chris... these posts are here for people to express their opinions, not necessarily adulation. I see quite a few negative comments in your profile... Mee-Ouch! (tsk-tsk!) By your own definition, you yourself seem entitled.

No class envy here. I do very well for myself. I have a minimalist loft in Manhattan. So, considering my design aesthetic, I don't appreciate the all-over shabby chic/flea-market-find style (nice in moderation though) or her overblown outfits.

Maybe we are seeing so may responses to this post because Kelly's decorating style is so bold, busy and extremely shabby chic.

Much prefer her Regency work to her Shabby Chic...
...but that's just my personal preference - I'm sure others feel the exact opposite.

Wearstler piques the imagination...
the article rounds out the picture of her and if you are a fan, galvanizes a profound appreciation.

THANK HEAVENS FOR ALMIGHTY KELLY WEARSTLER
and her rich new styles, still brimming with a playful loveliness.

By the way, waitressed her way thru college, centerfolded in vintage blue and green lingerie, it said...she is kind of numinous, i think, or a "...halfling..." or just too fabulous, enchanting.

Thank you Lauren Collins for a fine article.
