Moving Scam.com

2004_8_11_moving.jpgA smart consumer always.... We saw this today at Curbed and thought it useful. Moving Scam.com was started by Tim Walker in 2001 after he was scammed by a mover in Virginia. Three years later, Moving Scam keeps an updated blacklist with the help of volunteers of all the BAD ONES, and offers good advice on how to find a good mover. He DOESN'T have a list of GOOD ONES, so we will have to do that here at Apartment Therapy. (Thanks, Lockhart!) MGR

The whole point of Moving Scam is that there is no perfect mover. Some moving companies are managed relatively better or worse, but the general transience of the moving workforce leads to uneven results. I've used Moving Scam to help me pick a mover, and they have this great section where you can post your bids and industry smartie pants tell you which one is superior.

On February 5, 2007 we had "All Country Movers" come to our home in York, PA to move our stuff to St. Augustine, FL. We were very nervous not ever making a long distance move like this before, but were reassured by the company that everything would be just great. After a long investigation of the company, we decided that they "seemed" good. They came around 1:00 in the afternoon, and wew were trold that we would be recieving our things by the latest on the 12th of February. We were fine with that, being that my father was able to provide us with the comfort of his home in the meantime. On February 9, we called, and were told our stuff wasn't going to be coming until the 13th, but would undoubtably be there by then, we were fine, and understood that things happen sometimes. On the 12the we called confirming what was told to us, only to find out that it would not be coming until the 15th. On the 14th I called, confirming what Aurthur had said "I am the supervisor on duty, and I will be sure your stuff in on the truck, and at your home by Thursday" only to find that Arthur was now saying "Oh I thought today was Wednesday, let me call you back" (OK??) So about four hours later, and no call back, I called again, now furious, only to get the story that "your truck is broken down in Virginis, and it won't be fixed until tommorrow" I became highly upset at this point, thinking perhaps I would never see my things again. I reminded them as to what they had said, and concerned asked why I was getting such a run around, and several different stories. Then on Friday, I called again, asking when in fact I would be recieveing my things, and I was told that I would get our things by saturday night or first thing Sunday morning. I then recieved a call from the driver, whim confirmed that he would be here on Sunday morning between 8 & 9. On Sunday morning, the truck did arrive, but when they got off, before they would unload, they demanded the money first. We were concerned not knowing what condidtion our stuff was in, and whether it was all there, giving them our money because now they completely have the upper hand. We obliged resistantly, and they began to proceed in removing our things. As they were unloading the first thing I noticed wrong was that our brand new refrigerator looked like it had fallen off a truck three times, the door wouldn't close right, and the water supply in the back of the fridge was destroyed, there were dents, and scrapes all over it, then they pulled out our armoire, and the top was completely ripped off, our chandelier shades were crushed, our 30 inch TV wouldn't give us a picture, it was blue and red, dishes were shattered, and then they told us, that our mattress wasn't even on this truck, that it would be here ny Tuesday. I had a long mirror, completely missing...and now it is Thursday, and they are telling us that they don't even know where our mattress is. Previous to all of this, we had asked them if they brokered out our things, and they told us "absolutely not" , only to have Summit Van Lines pull up with our things. This move was an absolute nightmare. We are out $2000.00 and completely upset about it all. SO, DO NOT EVER GO WITH "ALL COUNTRY MOVERS" Total scammers, liars, and they don't care AT ALL about your things.

Just a quick note if you dig deeper into movingscam.com you will find they are actually under investigation for making defamatory comments about perfectly good moving companies along with the bad ones. they only give good reviews to six companies that pay them for the leads so it seems like a good idea but it's really a marketing trick by a fewmoving companies. http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/365/RipOff0365834.htm

Flat Rate Moving in NYC has done a great job for me and several friends. In setting up my move this year, they made sure to get the same "moving specialist" that I had a few years ago, since he'd be familiar with my furniture and belongings!

Also, to Melonie and others who've had bad moving experiences: you're mad as hell, and you don't have to take it anymore!!

There are a few simple steps you can take on your own.
1. Notify the credit card company you used for payment.

Often, this is enough to get things straightened out.

2. Contact the Attorney General for the state where the movers picked up your belongings.

Each state's AG helps with consumer fraud issues. Write them a letter stating what happened. The AG will get in touch with the company in question. You don't need a lawyer for this.

3. File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

They have a simple, online form you can fill out. The BBB then contacts the company in question.
