Thom Filicia is by far the most talented designer among the many on "reality TV", not counting true decorating shows like "Divine Design"(Candace Olsen rocks!). Also eagerly awaiting Kenneth Brown's new HGTV show coming in early March...
Have you seen Debbie Travis? Shes a bit nutty, I'm surprised sometimes that her ideas come out looking good at all.
I think the worst host is Joan Steffend, for Decorating Cents.
Thom is awesome. The Queer Eye for the Straight Girl designer is no where near as good as Thom.
I have to watch out for Divine Design now!
Debbie Travis is highly inventive, and the joy of her show (Facelift better than Painted House) is that it always looks like a complete train wreck until the reveal.
I LOVE Joan!!! She is soooo sweet. Don't hold her repsonsible for the sometimes-missed outcomes of her show... but that show gets credit for how much mileage they get out of $500... very often, a better result than comparable shows that have $1000 and $2000 budgets.
I also really liked This Small Space and Home to Go, both Canadian, but both no longer making new episodes.
And Designer Guys do nice work, if it's still on (not HGTV, though). But jeez, they are too gay as hosts, even for me!!! ;)
I love Joan Steffend and agree she shouldn't be held responsible for the outcomes since she is not the designer. And on that budget I think they often do better than the crews on Design on a Dime. Home to Go was also good with a budget with a DIY quality and always "movable" too. Have you seen the new show Design Remix where they redecorate with what you have lying around the house/garage/attic? Some amazing results for virtually no budget at all.
Where budget is seldom mentioned my favorite though is Candace Olson on Divine Design. She pulls off makeovers that cover the whole spectrum of styles and what a wacky sense of humor.
Although I think the apartment makeovers Thom does on Queer Eye are amazing, its never clear how much input he actually has and we see little of the process since it is not a pure interior makeover show.
Has anyone noticed the rise in shows similar to the program Sell this House?
Whenever they are on, I totally get pulled in.
A on going them, when people are shown a house, is how a rooms color can have such a negative affect, say like a room being blue. They usually end up going back painting it white, and then the prospective buyers like it better when brought back. So funny.
Oh and thought I'd mention too, how Queer Eye for the Straight Girl is no where near as good as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The decoration, and even just the chemistry between hosts isn't as enjoyable.
See, girls ruin EVERYTHING. ;)
I only saw the pilot, but the show's editing was really unfocused and the whole makeover was okay but not spectacular. Plus, there's no cootie factor -- you almost never see other shows on tv where gay men are fabulous and straight men love them for it.
Re its never clear how much input he actually has.
That is true (that you don't see much). I interned on the show last year and I can tell you he does all the planning and everything himself. He has a small team of between 10-20 people, depending on the size of the place and what needs to be done (to do painting, electrical work, etc.) but the design, even down to the small details, is pure Thom.
Joan Steffend i think you are a wondeful host on Decorating cents Joan Steffend i would like to havea pair of your flip flops i have dreamed about having a pair of your flip flops Bryan Davis 477 cr 2425 MIneola Texas 75773
Candace Olsen's "Divine Design" is really the best design show on hgtv. She goes beyond the simpleton
approach you see on most of the decorating shows.
It's a pleasure to watch a real designer work.
Frankly, the results on some of the other shows look almost amateurish compared to her rooms.
Joan Steffend i think you are a wonderful host on Decorating cents you are a really wonderful Decoator and Designer Joan Steffend i would like to have a pair of your flip flps i have dreamed about having a pair of your flip flops from Decorating cents Bryan Davis 477 cr 2425 MIneola Texas 75773
I just LOVE Candace Olson's designs! Always amazes me. Not to mention, I just LOVE the comedy with Chico and others. Too cute, I always laugh while watching such beautiful makeovers! How tall is Candace? She's beautiful!
I am a designer! How can I get on one of these shows! Maybe then I can become a host of my own show? Any suggestion on who or how to do these? How about a phone #? Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks!!!

Candace Olson is the best designer on HGTV. She's got great taste and style. Very funny, too and does not take herself so seriously. But it's obvious that she takes her work seriously. She has worked with her team for so long that it says a lot about her character, as well.
And of course, I love Thom Filicia of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. He's got excellent style and his interior designs are always tasteful in any given house.
I alsolutely love HGTV. It runs in my house on two TV's every waking moment. Regarding Joan Steffend, however, I have begun to change chanels every time she is on...which is OFTEN. She may be a wonderful person, but I think she has no place on HGTV. I cringe every time she shows ignorance of something. Realizing that the shows are scripted, it may not be her fault. Anyway, thanks for everything else. Candice Olsen is a very imaginative designer, but a little "saccharine" at times.
