If you need another room, and have some room, putting up a wall can be a great solution. If you live in a rental or you want to save $$, renting a temporary wall can be an even better solution. 1Wall2Rooms.com is one of the temporary wall companies in NYC that we've heard of, and though we've never worked with them, the look pretty good.
Like most of these companies (we also know of the Living Space Co.), they will give you a quote/estimate only after you submit their webform and they install quickly and without mess in one visit after that. The walls come with options for French Doors and windows, and can be L-shaped or straight. They are painted white and we don't believe you can paint them another color. They use pressure to fit into your space, so that no screws or glue are needed. They are non-damaging...

i was thinking about doing this in my children's room to split in 1/2 when they get older since i have a boy and a girl. does anyone know if there's any company that does this where you don't have to rent the wall?

I used http://thewallpeople.com since they could do walls at irregular angles (I created a six sided room). I think most of these companies let you paint and hang items on the wall, and the only thing they worry about are the doors, as they reuse them.
If you don't want a rental, many carpenters or contractors can build similar temporary wall set ups. The thing with these rental companies is that's all they do, so they are super fast. My six sided room with 2 doors, with walls that are cut around wall molding and ceiling beams was put up and painted in a day and a half.
If you're separating any kind of bedroom, think about asking for sound dampening options, as these walls can only block as much noise as a couple sheets of drywall.

I have a livingspace wall. It is a 3-year rental (regardless of how long you need it), after which I have to call them to take it down and get my security deposit back (about $200). I think I paid about $1600 but my wall had a "pop-out" to accommodate a desk. I have heard some of the other companies are a bit cheaper.
The wall itself is actually pretty good. It is definitely not noise-proof at all, but it has lasted for 2 years and is relatively sturdy. I once asked about painting, and they basically said you can do whatever you want to the wall- they wouldn't even charge you for making a huge hole in the wall.

For $300 to $600, one could have the materials delivered and construct just such a wall themselves, thus avoiding continued rental fees.

I want to wall off a section of the living room to make it into a bedroom. I am considering having livingspace's compression walls installed.
I am also considering making a wall much less expensively out of Ikea bookcases, bolted to each other and to the wall, and trimmed out to reach the ceiling. I'd make the door out of a bookcase with doors, but with the back and bottom plinth omitted. And you can use the bookcases!
Does anyone know if the compression walls are significantly BETTER in any way than bookcase-wall? In particular, are the livingspace compression walls more soundproof than a bookcase-wall?

I had these people take space from my living room and build me a 6 by 6 foot closet to accommodate my husband's sports equipment, as I got tired of having my living room look like an adolescent gymnasium! I couldn't be more pleased. They worked quickly and efficiently, and even though they were denied access for several hours by the gorilla at the gate here they managed to finish on time!
This closet is now adjacent to another and works in the space so well that one would never know it wasn't always here! The door fits and they even put a new doorknob on to match that of the other closet right next to it. I feel the price was very fair for what I got and didn't even shop around.

Attempting to install your own bookcase wall can be dangerous if you plan on following the buildings criterea about damaging the floors walls and ceilings. If you bolt them into place, the repairs are likely to come out of your apartment security. If you don't, they tend to be top heavy and tip, especially if you plan on installing a door as well.
The New York Wall Co. are the innovators of the custom pressurized partition. Through our professionalism, diligence and craftsmanship, we opened doors and paved the way for roomates to be able to comfortably share their apartments. But we are not stopping there. We have just spent the last 6 months developing and patenting our own bookcase wall. Solid, non tipping, functional. Complete with a door.
Recently, there have been inquiries from the NYC Department of Buildings concerning pressure walls. We don't know what the long range outcome will be but we understand the need for people to be able to share their apartments. That is why we decided to expand our product line. Our new bookcase wall does not touch the ceiling but it does offer total privacy. Prices are reasonable and we still save you a ton of money by giving you the option to share your apartment and it's expenses.
