2004_10_27_handyman.gifWe are so glad to hear about Myk Henry who was recommended to us by one of his clients. A finish carpenter with 15 years of experience in "top end" renovations on the Upper East and West sides, Myk can "build or repair anything." He also regularly installs wood cabinetry with a designer cabinet company.

Myk charges $50 an hour and reports that his clients say he is "worth every penny." Luckily for us he prefers to do small jobs, but he can organize a crew if the job requires it. If you are in need of carpentry work, we recommend giving Myk a call and letting us know how it goes.

Just hired Myk to do a bunch of small jobs around my house. He hung a coatrack, moved a large painting for me, and spakled and pained the messy holes left behind. He fixed some cabinets that my last contractor had done a shoddy job on; also hung a hammock on my roof and had these great metal brackets custom made. Myk is very professional, excellent at everything he did here, and a pleasure to be around (which is nice if someone's going to spend time in your house). I highly recommend him for any kind of carpentry/handyman work.

I hired Myk off of Craigslist. So glad I did...A great carpenter who does excellant work. I have had several contractors and workman in my place over the last year and Myk is the best. I sent him on to a friend with the best recommendations. I wil definately call him again.

I find it hard to believe that Myk was willing to do such small ordinary jobs for regular folks. Maybe he is a victim of his own success. He wasn't interested in building an entertainment center for my friend. He was really rather rude on the phone, stating he only works on high, high end projects. I guess if you are a banker it makes sense to hire Myk. Not sure why he would get such a high recommendation from Apartment Therapy. I though the site prided itself on being self reliant & budget conscious. This guy is way too bougie.

I'm in agreement with Jen. Not sure why so highly recommended. Found him very rude on the phone and felt like the small jobs I needed were beneath him - even though thats what he says he likes best. Don't recommend.

I am in shocked at the two previous postings. In my opinion, Myk is a very skilled contractor and carpenter, with a strong background in a wide scope of renovation and interior design skills. I cannot understand why the two women who posted negative reviews are able to judge his competency AND personality by a phone call?! Do either of these people have experience in hiring professional contractors in this city? I have been burnt many times. Myk is EXTREMELY well priced for the very high end designer and custom made furniture he made for me. He is honest, reliable and fair with great communication skills. I have already recommended him to many friends and colleagues are impressed by his work after visiting my apartment. Thanks for your interior design expertise and delivery of great service! Good luck.

"bougie"? wow - me thinks you're a whole lot of nuts.

i just had myk hang some floating shelves... which involved attaching plywood to my sheetrock wall and rethinking the bracket system. it couldn't have gone better. he works fast and clean and he really takes ownership of a project - he's doesn't just bang it out and move onto the next gig... he seems to really care about the outcome. i would highly and unconditionally recommend him.

on second thought, scratch that. believe what the above two nutjobs wrote because i have a number of other projects coming up and i don't want him to be booked!

I'm also quite surprised at the two negative postings. After my first posting I hired Myk again, and again found him highly professional, highly skilled, and truly pleasant. I have worked with many, many carpenters and contractors over the years I've lived in New York, and Myk is by far the best person I've ever hired. Myk is far from rude, which is one of the reasons I like him so much - he is quiet, respectful of other people's space, listens and delivers exactly what you want as you want it, and is personable and kind. I only mention this because these are such unbelievably rare qualities to find in someone in his business. If you are thinking of hiring someone for carpentry or handyman services, I urge to you call Myk and find out for yourself. I have recommended him already to friends and other members of my coop and will continue to recommend him without hesitation or reservation.

Myk just completed a job for me which exceeded my expectations. He built and installed very high end closet doors in 3 rooms and delivered incredible craftsmanship in the process. I had an idea for the design and the materials, he made it happen. The work was complex, and he took the time to do it right. It took a while but the results are fantastic! If you want high end craftsmanship and a keen eye for every detail, I would highly recommend working with Myk. I also agree he is great to work with on a personal basis, highly respectful and does all he can to help you get what you visualize.

I am also suprised by the negative postings. I had Myk fix some of the carpentry my previous contractor left in an unacceptable state. He did an excellent and very professional job and is pleasant to be around. If you know what you want he most likely is able to accomplish it.

Someone called me today for a reference for Myk and mentioned this site so I checked it out and saw the comments. I whole heartedly agree with all of the positive comments. Myk has worked for me for years. In fact, I have an "annual checkup" for the work that has accumulated and that I am ready to do. I cannot think of many people who have the skill, not to mention the charm, that Myk has.

This guy should be taken off this site. I called him twice and left messages and he never returned my calls. If he has too much business, fine. But not returning the calls to say as much makes him just like the majority of lame-ass contractors and carpenters, who rarely show any consideration for their customers.

Please disregard above comment. Myk was out of the country and called me when he got back. My apologies, Myk.

I cannot recommend Myk more highly. He was exceptionally professional, meticulous, careful, respectful, detail-oriented, and a masterful problem-solver. It is rare to work with someone who makes the type of investment and takes such care with his work as Myk did, and in your home, this quality is critical. Myk's work exceeded my expectations, and I would recommend him to anyone without reservation.

Myk did end doing a job for us, and he did great work. We need a table and chairs repaired -- and he was straight up and clear about the situation and what kind of results to expect. Those results, by the way, exceeded our expectations. Thanks, Myk.

Based on the recommendations on this site, I called Myk to hang a french door. Myk returned my phonecall quickly, gave me an estimate, and did a beautiful job hanging the door. The job was finished on time, on budget. He's a nice guy, too. I would not hesitate to use him again.

does myk custom build loftbeds? i need someone to build one for a very small studio (360 sq ft) and would appreciate any solid references.

I hired Myk to design and build a home office for me inside my loft.

The design work is exceptional and the work itself is meticulously and beautifully executed. The office is not only functional but a pleasure to use.

He is delightful to have in your home.

He returns phone calls and emails promptly (this is totally contrary to my experience) AND his phone manner is more than pleasant.

I would recommend him unconditionally and I would not hesitate to work with him again.

I just did a gut renovation in the West Village and used Myk for all the finishing touches where the level of craft was really important -- including custom bookcases and sills. He was a delight to work with, extremely conscientious and highly commited to the quality of the end product. He bent over backwards to make sure every detail was perfect and I love the result. If your project invovles anything with wood or metal and needs a clever eye and a master's touch, Myk is your man.

I recently hired Myk to install two flat screen televisions in my apartment. I am EXTREMELY fortunate Myk was available for the job, as his significant design and construction experience facilitated a masterful final work product. Myk is an exceptionally talented carpenter, who surpassed my expectations with his committment to detail, patience, and gracious manner. Bottom line - I am ecstatic with the "value" I received from Myk for the cost of his services.

Myk just did a few smalls jobs around the apartment and then built some pretty complicated shelves into a closet. Not only was his work PERFECT - but he was super friendly, polite, and extremely hard working. He cleaned up after himself and shuffled around his schedule, staying extra late to make sure the job was done on time and the right way (neither of which are of much concern to most other contractors). A careful and courteous worker. Fully recommended!

Myk built a great loft for my son. The highest praise I can give him is that he is so easy to work with. It is very hard for us to make big decisions like this ad working with someone who is so accommodating and approachable meant that we actually got it done rather than waffling. The loft looks great and my son is ecstatic with it. Will definitely be passing his name on to my friends.

Myk expertly rebuilt my closet the other day. He does what he says, charges fairly, and left my apartment in excellent shape. He also happens to be a very interesting, thoughtful fellow, an unexpected fringe benefit.

I endorse absolutely all the positive comments posted here. Can't say enough good things about the work Myk did for me and the extremely intelligent, thoughtful and skillful way he went about it. A craftsman, no doubt about it. Unequivocally recommended.

Wow! What a fabulous experience I have just had with Myk! Another contractor started a project and "got too busy to finish". Myk saved the day!! Myk was recommended to me by a friend who had only good things to say! Myk was great to work with; trust worthy, high-quality work and honest about the project scope and costs! His craftmanship and attention to detail was greatly appreciated!! He comes highly recommended! After some previous bad experiences with NYC contractors, Myk was a breathe of fresh air!! Thank you Myk for a job well done!!

Myk just finished a good sized project for us. He replaced all of our interior doors in the apartment with gorgeous solid core doors that he cut himself and then installed here. He also re-did the interiors or our closets which were a pre-war nightmare. He replaced our vanity in the bathroom and replaced our disgusting kitchen floor with gorgeous cork. (Everyone should use cork, btw!).

We also had him do a bunch of tiny little things that would have taken me forever.

I can't believe the negative review from someone who spoke to Myk on the phone. He's a carpenter, not a phone support guy. I actually had Myk do an incredible amount of work for us and I can assure you that he is amongst the most talented, careful and fair carpenters you will find anywhere on earth. His attention to detail and pure artistic ability to master his craft is stunning. He can also problem solve like an astronaut. We had closet people come in and they couldn't figure out how to fix our closets. Myk looked at it for about five minutes and came up with an amazing plan that has yielded the best possible storage options AND was not too expensive.

As for Myk's friendliness, let's just say that my wife and dog both prefer him over me now.

You can not go wrong with Myk Henry, especially if you have an eye for details and want things done right.
