NY Good Questions: Modern Chairs For This Farm Table?

12.11table.jpgHello AT,

I'm moving into a large, restored factory loft with a white and stainless steel kitchen and polished concrete floors.

I wanted to warm up the space a little, so I was thinking about buying a long, rectangular farmhouse table and pairing it with white, modern chairs (Don't want to go with matching benches because I find that too much rustic furniture in an old, raw space can start to look theme-y)...

Do you think the Eames Eiffel side chairs be a good choice? Or would tying it together with the steel in the kitchen by choosing something like the Marais chairs in guntmetal be better?

I love the old Thonet No. 18 chairs, but worry that the woods may clash with each other and Thonet's longer table (KMS Dairy) doesn't have a whole lot of character. I don't have to go with this particular table, but really like the idea of a wood/modern contrast.

Thanks! Robyn

In my last, bigger apartment I paired my white Eiffel chairs with a simple wood table and it was beautiful! I took the inspiration from a cover of Living Etc. that had a rustic table with white Eiffel chairs. It was a really nice combination together.

The Marais chair is speaking to me more strongly, as a transition piece that links the sleek, modern kitchen to the rustic table... but it's also more the sort of style I'd like in the first place, so take that with a sprinkle from the Geisel salt shaker.

my vote is for the marais - friends have the same set up with a beautiful old farm table and those metal chairs. if you want to mix it up, sundance has them in red and maybe other colors, too.

Where is that table from?? I too am looking for a farm table. I am about to give up on finding a used old beat up version as I have been haunting auctions in my rural neck of the woods with no luck.

I like the Eiffel chairs paired with it personally - but I think both would look good.

You can also go with the Tulip chairs.

Another vote for the Marais, for the tie-in with the stainless steel in the kitchen.

Put me on the Marais band wagon.

Actually on the main page, the rubber band chair picture juxtaposes very nicely with this table. :)

I would probably vote the Marais, too. The thicker lines just seem to go better with the chunky table legs.

I also think the Marais are more appropriate. They are somewhat industrial (like the apartment) and somewhat vintage-y (like the table). Good luck.

The Marais, to me, is not a strong modern statement. It still says "farmhouse" to me.

i have a catalog here from sundance and it shows a chunky farm table paired with the marais chairs and it looks really great together. i think either one will look great!

Pick the chair that's most comfortable to sit in. The table's style goes well with both, so having chairs that are comfortable and that work as spare seating where needed becomes the biggest factor. My parents are still using a used dining table that they picked up when I was tiny, because the chairs are very comfortable and sturdy. They even built the dining room in their new house to suit it, because they like the way it encourages people to sit and be sociable.

Eames eiffel! Eames eiffel! Eames eiffel!

I love the look of the shell chairs with old wooden tables. I have a round dark oak table in my kitchen with a set of orange shells, and it looks smashing (if I say so myself). At the cabin we're building, we'll be using a harvest table with a set of mismatched shell chairs. You just can't go wrong with them, in any colour scheme, and I think your choice of white (though... you could also go with cream, which gives almost the same effect minus the starkness) will be stunning.

And I can attest that the shell chairs are super comfortable. When we have people over for meals, we practically have to shoo them away from the table to the living room.

I have a similar table and although it's currently surrounded by crappy ikea wood chairs (that I've painted a black lacquer) my dream chairs are the emeco 1006's. So I guess my vote is for the marais.

Love the Eames Eiffel. With the table pictured, it just looks like something that would be on the cover of Living, etc.

Yes it will be a nice match with the eiffel chairs in white or cream. Depends on what your are going for. You can get the chairs here http://www.exoticaunique.com/products/product.php?pid=777

The metal may be cold to the touch, not to mention the tush. I vote Eames.
