2004_7_basics 1.jpgNote to self: never use the word "cheap." Basics Furniture is up for review today and inclusion into the Stores Guide, after having been mentioned by a number of readers. Originally, we didn't plan to include this type of store in the Guide, because it was so far from being a place where we would shop, but the world is filled with different folks, and we realize that stores like Basics can be useful....

2004_7_basics bed.jpgFirst of all, Basics is not cheap. Ikea is cheap. Basics sells new, contemporary furniture (which we abhor) at reasonable prices, and they do a good job of keeping their prices below $1,000, which is the point most people start to get scared. Many of their designs are too much, but they have some simple beds, chairs and dressers (see Campaign Bed at right) which are not offensive. They also don't take long to deliver and they have a local store which makes it easy to find and speak to them (It is also interesting that they only have one store, but it seems like they are part of a chain).
We recommend Basics as a place to look because:
a. their website makes it easy to see what they have
b. their price point is good
c. because they do offer a wide range of items from bedrooms to desks to lighting.
d. AND they are aware that apartments are small and have small furniture

Beware that you can usually judge furniture stores by their covers, and the quality of this furniture looks to be medium to low. Expect that these pieces will not last forever. However, if you are on a tight budget, like funky, colorful furniture and want to buy a few cool pieces for your bedroom, this could be your ticket. MGR

Basics has a small selection of modern kitchen/bathroom hardware (cabinet handles/knobs, towel racks, toothbrush, paper towel, razor & cup holders, etc.) on display in the store that I can't seem to find these on their site. They're somewhat reasonably priced. My wife and I thought they were far more pleasing than the options at Home Depot. Your opinion of their appeal may vary.

So it's one year later (7/10/05), and Basics Furniture appears to be no more. I just walked by the store today, and it was empty, shuttered, and available for rent. Strange, because about a month ago it was open and I went in. Too bad, I dug the store. They had various pieces I enjoyed and I got my bed there, which is great and has lasted sturdily for 4 years and I don't think I'll be needing one anytime soon. Their website seems to be have taken over by some other furniture behemoth.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive furniture store, similar to Basics but not Ikea?

New Store to replace Basics, and much better... go to Natrona on 20th ST at 145 W 20th, they have way better stuff. I live on the block, and this store is open late (7days a week), has everything in stock, and is shall I say.... SEXY.

Does anybody know where I could find accessories to Basic's WSO Desk Furniture Collection?
I have a cherry wood desk now for 6 years and have always wanted to get the hutch that was designed for that desk.
Ugh, I could kick myself for not purchasing it way back when I bought the thing!
Anyway, I can't seem to find the manufacturer for this desk but remember that there were plenty of desks being sold with the hutch. Any leads would be helpful. thanks.
