Most handheld vacuums look like, well, a handheld vacuum. But the Kone, designed by Karim Rashid for Dirt Devil, could pass for sculpture.
The cordless conical vac sits seamlessly in a charging cradle base until you need it. Available in 6 colors and looking this hot, it wouldn't be out of place sitting out in the open.
Has anyone used this yet? We're always disappointed in handheld vacuums and wonder if this one works as well as it looks. It's definitely accessible at only about $40. -regina

I have it in the champagne color (silvery bronze). It is great- works better than the dust buster and looks much better- I have it in the corner of the room and it looks really cool.
I've been puzzled by the hype of this vaccuum. As knickknacks go, it's fine but not so nice that I'd affirmatively want to display it, so it's basically a nicer looking version of something that sits in a closet. Is the idea that people are going to really display it? Because I've never thought, "gosh, I wish this vaccuum looked better so I could leave it out." I'm more impressed with the industrial design behind handhelds that actually work (and hold a charge).
I also have the champagne color. I think it looks nice and works really well but the actual cone tip starts to fill up if you use it more than a couple of times w/o emptying it, and I have a very hard time opening it up to empty it. So I am quickly losing my initial love for it. The instructions say you should empty it after each use.
A lot of people (particularly those with kids) actually do leave their dustbusters in the corner of the kitchen, etc. so it's nice to see some attention paid to the design. I think it helps that this is 1) vertical, so it takes up minimal floor space; 2) available in a range of colors, so it can blend easily into walls.
From a performance standpoint, I would not describe it as much of an improvement over regular dustbusters as it is a bit awkward to hold, and the suction is pretty much just the same; but the docking station is a big improvement. My old one was very hard to replug into the charger, so most of the time it was dead when I tried to use it. And the LED actually is useful as a nightlight in the particular corner where I have this stashed.
Given the reasonable price, I felt this was worth it, unlike the horrible Karim Rashid corkscrew I once bought, which broke every cork I used it on. As a designer he's a bit form over function, but for something that doesn't see heavy use like this it works out OK.
I also have it in the champaigne color. I bought it last summer for day to day clean up around the cat litter box and kitchen. I didn't expect too much from the 7-volt motor but was extremely impressed by the power. I am very happy. The best part is that it sits on the bookshelf without drawing attention. Now, I wouldn't use it for any major vacuuming but it does the little work just fine.
ATLA did a review of this awhile back- click on my name for the link
i have it in pink. it is very powerful, and works very well. it's cheap and effective. everyone should get one!
i also have the champaine kone sitting in my kitchen near the cat litter box. i like the way it looks, and it gets the job done. the only problem i found so far is the greater level of noise than my old shark vacuum. so the cat is a little bit afraid of the kone. overall though, i would buy it again.
I've only ever seen this in the store after having seen it in magazines. I was super excited b/c all the reviews had also mentioned its "compact size," so when I got my hands on it I was SUPREMELY disappointed. The damn thing is HUGE!!!! (at least to my 300 or so sq ft apartment dwelling eyes it was)
YAY! I want one of these. I hate my dust buster. I use it mostly to pick up stray cat litter - which likes to fall right out of the dust buster back onto the floor. Yay! I'm going to def. get one of these.
I was thinking about buying this as a present for Christmas to myself and to few people I know. My friend has one at her home so I wanted to test it. It's pretty loud but I expected that out of any handheld. It blows air on the left side so if I don't vaacum from the left to right, it blows the dust away instead of picking them up. They say that they are bagless because it has a pocket filter to collect the stuff to discard. But the filter get clogged pretty quickly and you would have to *unload* often.. But then again, it's not meant for heavy duty cleaning anyways. I love the look. My friend has the white one with the light. It glows at night and matches perfectly with her mac. :)So there is my review on it..
I am enjoying mine alot. The power seems stronger than dust busters I have had years ago. I am hoping that strength holds up. It looks great but I will agree it is sometimes hard to hold on to.
In the corner of a hallway it has become an interesting conversation piece. Rashid does some homeruns.... The Oh! chair and Garbino for Umbra and some huge strikeouts...the whole housewares line for Copco. This one works.
I dunno - it looks kind of like a big lava lamp to me.
We received this as a wedding gift and love it! The Kone is perfect for cleaning up around the kitchen table after dinner or sucking up dirt around the plants after watering. It fits in well with our Ikea furniture too while being easily accesable after a spill. We haven't had to empty it out very often like some folks are saying. But then we don't have kids yet... that will be the ultimate test. Otherwise we give it two thumbs up.
I'm looking to upgrade from a small low-tech handbroom & dustpan for sweeping up ash around our scandanavian wood stove every few days. Any reports on how well this thing can pick up such light powdery material (for diposal into the nearby ash can, and avoiding the cinders, of course)?
Miele is the Best. It will pick up anything. If you want something that will cut down on the allergens there is only one true answer. Miele is the only truly HEPA certified vacuum cleaner, because you can put a HEPA filter on any vacuum but most just leak before the dirt even makes the HEPA filter so you are really just redistributing particles in your house. Don't believe me, check this out:
Through a particulate analysis on YouTube, I show how well the Miele vacuum works and truly traps the dust. My findings prove that the Miele Vacuum is completely sealed and really is HEPA.
YouTube Miele Vacuum Video â As seen on ABC 7
You can see from this video that the Miele will trap all of the particles in a cloth like bag that self-seals on its way out and you are actually purifying the air in your house by vacuuming! The filtration is 99.95% effective at 0.3 microns which is amazing. Thanks to its HEPA filter and super intensive clean bags the vacuum is able to achieve this kind of filtration.
