Closeup: Michael's Neutral Palette & Bright Artwork

Michael has used a neutral palette to allow his art collection to stand out. The walls are white and brick, and the furniture is brown and tan. The color pops up in the paintings.

What do you think of letting the artwork add color to neutral decor?

If you've got good art, I think it's a great strategy.

I agree. Good art deserves center stage, and a neutral setting is ideal. But neutrals are broader than just beige and white. (Although what's done here is beautiful!) I like deep colors with just a hint of hue as a backdrop for dramatic art. Like an almost-aubergine brown or greenish-charcoal grey. Shades that recede and can't be easily described tend to bring out the best in colorful art.

This reminds me of Berger's studio on Sex and the City. I like it!
