apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Armagnac TH56

(While Mark is away hunting down new colors in Mexico, we're running his top old hits. This post earned 3,208 pageviews last year.)

Name: Armagnac TH56
Brand: Ralph Lauren

I love these dark browns so much I could write about them every week. I wrote about my own brown accent wall last summer (Galvanized UL-12). Compared to my room, Armagnac is actually lighter and more chocolatey; Galvanized is like an espresso bean, though both have a red base. (And if anyone wants a green-based brown room, let me know.)...

This is a bedroom in a Brooklyn brownstone, with a second floor fireplace on the left. The effect is certainly womb-like, but to see the color in situ you would understand that the wide trim, enormous windows, white bedspread and afternoon sunlight all help to break things up, so that you never feel trapped. Not to everyones taste, perhaps, but for those of us who like that sort of thing its heaven.

Mmmm...love it! (loved your earlier brown too)

How about I suggest a brown-based green (that's almost a green-based brown...)?

I keep wishing that one day you will feature my favourite colour, the darkest green (with brown) in the Donald Kaufman Color Collection. I forget the number, but you should be able to find it easily enough. We have it on one wall in the living room, and it is very comforting and womb-like (in an earthy way).

This is quite beautiful. So rich. Evocative of Bogart.

Such a pleasant change from the safe colors I've been seeing.

I am seriously in love with these yummy chocolatey/coffee colors right now. I am thinking about a espresso-y color for our bedroom. I think it will go great with our crimson comforter.

I love dark colours like this for a bedroom. I just painted mine Hot Chocolate by BM and I love it.

this is great as we head into winter, but what's the effect of walls this color when the first buds of spring appear? i love these rich tones, but self-imposed seasonal affective disorder come may is my concern. anyone survived to tell the tale?

I also painted my bedroom in dark colours - now it's nice and cozy!

The walls look edible! Where can I get the small lamp on the table?

HB -- While I haven't tried it myself in full-size real-life, I'd bet that bright, intense, spring colors would glow against those browns. Lime green, in particular, should look fabulous.

No seasonal effect disorder here HB, I live in this bedroom and in the summer it is my "cool cave". Thanks again Mr. Chamberlain.

I have this exact colour on my kitchen walls. Everything else is white. It's been that way for five years and I still love the colour. It's so warm and yummy and makes an excellent backdrop for candle lit dinners.

This is kind of funny. My submission to the color contest wasn't accepted based on, what I can only assume was its quality, since it was sent in before the deadline. It was of my very brown living room, not quite unlike the one above that everyone seems to like.

MMM this photo almost singlehandedly inspired me to paint my bedroom similarly a few weeks ago - BM Roast Espresso beans and I LOVE it! I have royal blue and some red accents and its a very sexy, strong sophisticated look.

I've got an interest in a green brown. I have a white built-in hutch that I think would look great next to a green brown. But...um...my other walls are an intense chartreuse-y green. It's a really vibrant room and I love the green and so does everyone else. I've been thinking of contrasting it with a calming and warm dark green brown. Good idea or insane?

Maybe I should send some photos...would that be of interest?

My boyfriend and I painted 2 accent walls in our living room in a rich, dark, chocolatey brown 4 years ago. Our furniture is mostly stark white as is our window treatments and we use art to give the room pops of bright sunny yellow and red. It's kind of funny, when we first did it, our friends and family were dubious and now, 4 years later the same friends and family keep commenting on how fresh it looks. I guess 4 years of seeing chocolate walls featured in magazines can sway taste. Finally, I am vindicated!!! *LOL*

OK, here's the answer to everyone who lives in a Craftsman house or inherited dark wooden antiques. Embrace the brown.
