apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Claret, Again

Name: Claret
Brand: Ralph Lauren

This is my first color repeat, but the context this time is completely different. I wrote about Claret last year, but the furnishings and fabrics in that room were a bit more rustic, and we had painted the trim in a smoky blue...

By contrast the building in the opening photograph was new construction and the furnishings were more contemporary. We wanted something rich and dramatic to paint this small study.

Claret was the first really dark color I ever used to paint an entire room, and I think it works here because of all those windows and clean white trim. As Ive said before, these dark colors are very sexy. After the room was finished, I wasnt sure I wanted to go into it, but once I did I felt as if the walls were going to peel off my clothes and wrap their arms around me.

After the room was finished, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go into it, but once I did I felt as if the walls were going to peel off my clothes and wrap there arms around me.

I echo this sentiment. We used this color in our bedroom, which I wanted to be a boudoir and not just a bedroom. Claret looks very intimidating in the can, but once it was on the walls, I felt like the room turned into the intimate space I craved. An added plus, it went with the lovely quilt my grandmother made to celebrate the 10 years of my marriage.

I always read the color therapy posts with interest. Lately, I've been thinking more and more about the quality of photos. Through reading Desire to Inspire and seeing examples of great photographers' work, as well as in my attempt to photograph my own apartment, I've become acutely aware of how difficult it is to photograph a home.

In considering whether to enter this year's color contest, I found AT's tips on photographing a home very helpful

This designer has been posting at AT for a long while. I have watched AT grow and become better and better. And now it is time for this designer to challenge himself. Look back at these photos on Color Therapy. The colors are fantastic and the explanations interesting, but the photos leave much to be desired.

I would like to encourage this designer to boost his photography skills. This platform deserves better presentation. And perhaps the AT management should buy him a better camera.

I remember this room. The trim is painted Benjamin Moore's "Pale Smoke" which after I saw in the photo, I used for the accent walls of my apartment with a lighter shade for trim, and white for the ceilings and entrance, hallways. The apartment's windows all face west so the light works well with this blue-gray. (Thank you, Mark for introducing me to this color.)

Claret scares me. I am claustrophobic as it is and do not need any arms to peel off my clothes and hold me. (Just reading that made me reach for the Xanax.)
