apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Classic Brown

Name:Classic Brown
Brand:Benjamin Moore 2109-10

I’d like to kick off our fall season with a newly discovered brown—it’s a color that makes for the sexiest parlor room this side of the Potomac. My photography might be a bit Pointillist, but those stairs want to lead us right up to Brown Heaven…

A top decorator organized this project, and I have it on good authority that Classic Brown was a personal favorite of Billy Baldwin: he, the master of pattern on pattern. That just goes to show—brown looked good in the 60s, it looked good in the 70s, it looks good now, and it’s also perfectly in step with this period of architecture. (Look for a future CT in Film post: The Winslow Boy.)

And what joy, all my favorite things at once! Brown, blue and brown, blue hydrangeas, black and white photos, and I can’t get enough of that antelope rug. I had to force myself to leave after the photo shoot.

There was a question for a moment about whether or not Classic Brown was too dark for this room, but in the end good taste prevailed. I almost thought it was too light at first--the color looked like cake batter on the chip, but more like truffles once it got up on the walls.

Yes, Maxwell, this is your childhood home [true. my mother still lives in the downstairs apartment and rents out this top one - mgr]. Waddaya think [I love the brown, but don't recognize my old home;-)] ? And thanks, Scott, I couldn’t have done it without you.

I love the brown, but that chair rail is just too wimpy looking compared to the rest of the trim. Beefier trim, or a less stark white would be better.

That's just a sexy room - especially love the choice of carpeting.

jacasi --

Retail stores that specialize in carpets and flooring - unlike places such as Home Depot or Lowe's - will have a selection of animal-patterned wall-to-wall carpet available to order.

I really like the brown, but it's a bit dark. If it looked like the lit up portion even in the shadows, that would be more like it.
