apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Grape Green 2027-40

Name: Grape Green 2027-40
Brand: Benjamin Moore

This is the kitchen in my friends’ Brooklyn brownstone, and bless their hearts, I’m still getting color columns out of them. Look at those architectural details! This is actually the first room we painted after they purchased the house many years ago...

I was much more retiring then, and remember pressing for the next shade lighter on the color chip (Hibiscus 2027-50). But they’re creative people and they know what they want; I’m glad we went all the way.

The thing I love about this room is how fresh and contemporary it is, without being garish. We’ve taken the concept of “brownstone” and brought it into the 21st Century.

Furthermore, I’ll point this out again: of all the mid-range paint brands available, I like Benjamin Moore best. Ms. B says that even after five years, she can still dab at the spaghetti sauce spills in this kitchen without it staining the paint. Just so you know, the trim color is Bavarian Cream (OC-123).

That's my foyer paint! YES!!! I had all the paint swatches up for almost a year while friends and family picked out the ones they liked ... I went with the least popular choice (but my own personal fave), but now they all love it. It's so happy in there ... especially in the evening ... has a soft glow when the lights are dimmed down.

And I agree about Benny Moore ... whatever color I pick (from any company's paint line) I still always have it mixed with Benjamin Moore instead. It holds up great and is super smooth ... you never ever see a brush stroke or anything.

What finish is the paint? I have an eggshell finish and get nervous about scrubbing it.

Is there entire kitchen painted this color, or did they just do an accent wall? I have a small kitchen that I want to paint, but I wonder if a color like this would be too overwhelming...

this is the color of two of our living room walls! i get lots of compliments, and i'm sure some are just people trying to be nice though they find it too overwhelming, but i love it. love, love, love it. it's really beautiful in the morning light, in a fresh and cheery way that just brightens everything around it, especially the two other white walls and the big white curtains in the room. i'm so glad this color was featured!

i think eggshell would scrub fine. when i recently repainted my kitchen, i use benjamin moore's new scrubbable matte finish, and it's fantasticly durable. i can even use a mild scouring pad to get paint off the wall that's rubbed off other pieces of furniture.

mr. clean is my hero. you could also use scrubable paint, which is almost as good as mr. c. (benjamin moore scrubable).
