apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Master Room, Part II; or Saffron

There was such an interesting volley of posts in response to my recent column on Master Room that I wondered if I could further provoke the argument by showing the kitchen next to it. Call this “Color in Context.”...

This kitchen was painted long ago, and the exact paint brand or color name is lost to the mists of time, but I’ll call it Saffron. It’s painted yellow but glows orange; it’s a warm, bright yellow more golden than school bus and less obnoxious.

I thought I’d hate these two colors together and yellow isn’t always my thing, but I was actually intrigued. The grey keeps the yellow from being too hippy-dippy, and the yellow keeps the grey from being too austere. Color is always contextual: no color exists in complete isolation, and surrounding environment is everything.

Cleanliness counts, too. This is one of the easiest photo shoots I’ve had in some time. Would that we all had such photogenic apartments.

This week, I'll ask readers to post their favorite warm yellow color recommendations.

I've got a couple warm yellow/orange colors in my house. I have Behr Yellow Bicycle in my bedroom (not for the faint of heart in a really sunny room, but my bedroom doesn't get a lot of light so it works well). I have an accent wall in my kitchen - Behr Honeybird. It seems like a weird color but it works well. If I went more orange it would have blended in with the wood tone of the cabinets too much. If it were more yellow it wouldn't have worked with the tile backsplash. It was a tricky one!

@bumblebee - I painted my bedroom this color a few places back. It has one rather large window and even the moonlight made it positively glow to the point at which I couldn't sleep. You have to be very committed to this color in a sleeping room.

Sorry to change the subject but where are the metal kitchen shelf from? Been looking for those and Ikea is too far to drive and their shipping is $$$.

Stockholm, completely agree. It works fine in my room cuz very little light gets in. If you're looking for a pop of color though it could work on an accent wall.
