ColorTherapy: Pinch Pleat Painted Stripes

Name: Shaded White 201, Slipper Satin 2004, Hardwick White 5, James White 2010, Charleston Gray 243, Clunch 2009, Wimborne White 239
Brand: Farrow & Ball

For the third installment of my Haus project from last month, I have something a bit more relaxed than last week’s post — stripes.

Unlike my other stripe designs of the recent past, this pattern didn’t have a specific repeat. The idea was accretion: I started painting stripes of varying dimension over a Shaded White background, continued randomly in alternating colors but using a sensitive artist’s eye and instinct, and finished when I thought I was done. The results look like pinch pleats or a universal bar code — decidedly contemporary, but still elegant.

The colors are themes on basic beige, or what Farrow & Ball would call off-white, in warm and cool tones. These colors reflect the furnishings in the rest of the apartment.

Glancing at the title I thought this might be a post about pinch-pleat draperies, and how they could be coming back into style...

Beautiful! Was this one freehand as well? If so my shaky hands are green with jealousy.

I did this on a large wall to camouflage the horridly-done drywall seams. I used a dark, peacock color as the base, then taped off the stripes at random intervals and widths. Using spackle, I created a sort of "smashy" texture in the stripes, let them dry, then painted them with a medium teal color. No more seams, and it's a heck of an accent wall.
