ColorTherapy: Riviera Pastels

Possible Names: Cypress VM27, Cinnamon VM35, Pink Chiffon VM39, Capri Pink VM71...more below
Brand: Ralph Lauren

I experienced my first color explosion on the Riviera a few years ago and have scarcely painted a white wall since. I marveled at the use of color on buildings both inside and out, in a palette I call “Sorbet and Baby Poo.”

Salmon, apricot, saffron and dirty ochre are undiluted and shimmer against copper green window shutters and the sea beyond. These images were taken in Nice and nearby Villefranche-sur-Mer, and a cabdriver mentioned that buildings lining the port of Nice are required by law to remain pastel.

I think colors like these would be smashing in a foyer or dining room, and I will be posting a coral-colored study in a few weeks. Homeowners: how do you feel? A pink house with green shutters might not fly in the suburbs I grew up in, but could be just the thing for a lakefront property upstate.

Possible matches: Ralph Lauren Cypress VM27, Cinnamon VM35, Pink Chiffon VM39, Capri Pink VM71; Benjamin Moore Coral Gables 2010-40, Hydrangea Flowers 2008-40. (And just for fun, let’s pretend the shutters were painted Seagrove, Ben Moore 653.)

Thank you so much, Mark, for this continuing education in color. I'm heading for Santa Fe and expecting to soak up lots of blues (sky) whites (clouds) pinks (sunsets) and ochres (adobe). I'm going to try matching them to paint samples, too.)

I think the combo of l very light orange (coral, peach, salmon, what have you -- all diluted light oranges) with light blues (as in sky) and dark greens (as in plants) is very calming and beautiful. And it does wonders in crepuscular light.

Describing my bedroom.

Good to hear about your newfound aversion to white walls. My particular pet peeve.

"dirty ochre"

I don't know why, but I giggled when I read that!

Yes, I just painted my living/dining/entry way (newly renovated - when I get off my ass, I will send a house tour in) a lovely warm golden ochre color: specifically HC-7 or Bryant Gold in Benjamin Moore. I love the warmth and fullness against my dark walnut floors.

If one goes to interior villages ( in the north part of india, in the village of Rajasthan ) the walls of the houses are of similar color ( the color of the sand - red, brownish red, yellowish white - they mix it with home based dyes to paint the houses ) that's what their house paint colours are limited to,- something to do with the reflection of sunlight etc. In contrast their clothes are brightly coloured - hot pink and sunny yellow, orange , blue, red, green, mirror work - all intertwined in one - all based out of vegetable dye. since the region is a desert and have limited source of water - it is said that the color of their clothes, and bright colors of their tents lifts thier spirit during the blazing hot sun.

I read in some magazine ( Inc, i guess ) that Dolce and Gabbana are now visiting these villages. In fact designers from every part of the world are flocking the interior parts of india - vividly know for their exquisite designs, colour and prints - the knowledge known only in the community.

well that's my 2 cents

I can't pass up a chance for South Africa boosterism -- These pics remind me of the Bo-Kaap/Cape Malay district in Cape Town. The colors are perhaps bolder in B-K - a traditionally Muslim, beautiful neighborhood that stands out even in a spectacular city. Great for inspiration...we're in the process of painting our house orange....
