apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: RLW Cabin

It was my great pleasure last winter to be involved in a project that I thought was rather special — a cabin in the woods designed by architect Larry Cohn of Huis Workshop as a personal getaway in upstate New York.

At the point I entered the frame, I found the nearly-finished project to be clean and precise in its design, with cool, polished concrete floors offset by rich, repurposed wood and an open flow of luminous space. Windows were placed high, affording privacy, light and copse-of-trees vistas without the need for drapes. What seemed like smallness from outside revealed abundant space inside due to smart planning.

Color-wise, we had this as an organizing concept: black box outside, white box inside with all “non-supporting” interior walls tinted in interesting hues. To a basic palette of gunmetal and grey, we added accents à la moderne along a primary triad of blue, red and yellow. Fun furnishings run from Pennsylvania flea-market finds to the dernier cri.

I’ll let pictures speak louder than words, but first let me point out that sharp mural in the opening photo by one Brian Gilmartin, painter extraordinaire. The idea was to bring the outside in by replicating the late-winter view from one of the windows. I still have the strike-off for this hanging in my studio. Skoal and good work, guys.

It's nice - but it looks more like a city apartment that got lost in the woods than a cabin.

The colors are beautiful. I am a color-holic, but am craving some nice greys along with natural elements. I love the couch too. looks sturdy and comfortable - any details on it?

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. That slice of red in the middle of the black & white forest is amazing.

Is it possible to see enlargements of the small photos at the end of the post?

Beautiful.

I am looking for a sofa just like that. I echo eek's comment, who makes it and where can I get one?

I love the lack of colour throughout with bursts of colour on a specific item. Very nice.

The sofa can be found at Cite in SoHo. ....and yes, it is just as comfortable as it looks.

The dining table started with some old table legs that we found lying in a corner of an antique store basement. We mounted them to a table top made with wood salvaged from construction, and industrial grade wheels were added to lift the whole thing up to counter height.

You can see additional photos of the cabin on our website: www.huisworkshop.com. Get in touch if you have any any other questions.

Thanks Mark & Brian for your great work on the place.

Would love to come by and see this--I own a cabin in Bethel that's in the midst of a renovation nightmare.
