ColorTherapy: Sergeant - VM103

Color: Sergeant - VM103
Brand: Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren came out with a new line of colors last April called Vintage Masters, and I can’t get enough of it. The palette contains dark, sensual, old-world colors evocative of high renaissance painting and the baroque. I feel like Michaelangelo every time I use one.

When I first used Sergeant, I thought I was dealing with a green paint with a red base to it, but that seemed like an oxymoron. Then I recently read something on the color industry, which explained everything: all colors have either a blue or a yellow undertone, whether or not you can “see” it. Sergent has the yellowest undertone of any dark green I’ve ever seen.

This color looks like it was plucked out of a painting by Rembrant, though here the eclectic décor reflects diverse influences including Persian and tribal textiles. This is another example of a dark color that is incredibly warm and cozy, without feeling oppressively cave-like.

Love that orange pillow. Where can I get it?

Would that color look good with a big red couch? I have a big down couch that's a more blue red than an orange red (I reference my hair dresser when I had my crazy hair dying days) - close to a wine color but not quite burgundy - deep red I suppose. I just can't figure out what wall color will go well with that couch!

we also have a red couch with cool undertones. we warmed it up with a lovely olive paint, and it looks gorgeous!

thank you for sharing this! we have been looking for a dark olive with yellowy undertones for the longest time to paint an accent wall in our bedroom - our current walls are a really light yellowy sage, but really depends on the lighting too. still, this looks like it will work perfectly.

That's a great color on that firt post, and it looks like what I've got on my wall, which I mixed up up with a set of kids' tempera paints, then had matched at my Benjamin Moore store. Of course, it wasn;t quite that eay, because the computer's readout made the kid behind the counter--and these days, they're almost always kids, the old guys who could match stuff by eye having retired to Arizona a long time ago--go crazy, and it took him three tries & a call to the manager to come over and help before he just listened to what HAL told him, which was that this isn't really green at all, just yellow & black. Anyway, it's a great color, and although I almost always mix up colors myself, if this is an indication of RL's new color direction, I'd better check it out. I've just about had it with the wow factor & those colors that pop that all those TV decorators seem to love. I figure there's too much popping going in the world already without having that stuff going on at home, too.

sort of any neutralized brownish green will work, though I must say I like the idea of rich olive green....

That color with that lamp and that pillow is absolutely fabulous.

Brandy, do you have a pic of your sofa with the olive paint? I couldn't find it.

I imagine this beautiful paint would work in a myriad of ways.

Ohh i'm so with you! Yesterday (before i read this blog) I went to purchase Lincolnshire Paint from the Vintage Masters Collection. I Absolutely LOVEEEE It.. also i was reading somewhere that green/blue tones are supposed to be more relaxing in the bedroom. Since we are first time homeowners in Chicago ( I know nyc is worse but coming from KC,MO This is EXPENSIVE!!!) .. We are on the do it yourself Kick. I will be posting pics soon. PS. I did my Kitchen Cabinets in Vintage Collection OATMEAL with the base color of English Tan. They look Amazing!

This has got to be one of my absolutely favourite shades of green. Mysterious and slightly shocking at first, it very quickly shows its versatility. I had a silver grey microfibre suede couch against these "olive" walls and it worked so beautifully.

Elizabeth, don't be afraid to try a warm wall like this juxtaposed behind a "cool" colour, like your red couch. Because they are not "toning" colours to begin with, the contrast can only make it jump out more, esp when it has great texture like down, which softens the look. Good luck!!

I have two dark red sofas with khaki/olive walls in my lining room - it looks fab!

This will look fab with my shower curtain from Expo. It is dark teal with shimmery silky fabric that has a sheen between this color and copper - depending on the light.

FYI, this color looks great with the dark teal and the pale (not obnoxious) turquoise.

Thanks for helping me pick one of my bathroom colors!
