apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

ColorTherapy: Silver Fox 2108-50

9-19-color.jpg

Name: Silver Fox 2108-50
Brand: Benjamin Moore

Close friends of mine have a brownstone in Brooklyn, which will provide me with at least six columns over the next few months because it's so interesting. They are both artists unafraid to be decoratively daring, and have invested every room in the house with a unique color...

The overall palette of their home reminds me of that in The Winslow Boy.

Silver Fox is one of those wet cement colors that looks like a warm grey on the wall, but comes off of a brown page in a fan deck. A breathtaking Italian gilt-framed mirror hangs over the fireplace, and the warm base of this color picks up on the red in the gold. Although the decor of this room has changed over the years, this color always brings everything into balance, and across a variety of styles: moderne, Mediterranean, contemporary as well as the artists own work.

Just as the name implies, Silver Fox is a quiet classic.

- Mark Chamberlain, interior and decorative painter

Nice hutch, who makes it?

i second that question, i'm looking for a hutch....just like that! it's awesome.

The paint just looks grayish-white to me. Now, they have nice things and if all they want is a backdrop that won't fight it, mission accomplished.

I just like my wall colors to have more color in them. Personal quirk.

As for the hutch, by the woven textile on the face of the doors, I have a suspicion it may be Paul McCobb. (cf: http://www.architonic.com/mus/8101346/1 /.
As for the color not being colorful enough - worthy point but perhaps too quick. Take a look at the neat link he lists, to the named and numbered color, on a searchable grid at Benjamin Moore.com. It actually has a distinct matte and slate-y color, well suited to the muted but saturated orange and green in there, perhaps ill-served by the photo's lighting. Hey, Bluearms: you're now going to have to learn For-The-Computer-Photo-Lighting techniques!
Go, Go, Go guy! Love it.

like the previous discussion about putty color, this paint color mkes the wood and colors in the room look richer.

LOVE that hutch -- would be perfect in my "mid-century madness"!!!

Color is great too. In my experience, subtle grays like this one tend to make a room appear much larger -- another great benefit!

The more I look at this the more I'm thinking this could be a very effective solution for my living room. I've only really done book cases before in the living room, but I really like how this gives a variety of storage options. Never thought I'd be attracted to a hutch.. :)

Mark,
I love this post about Silver Fox! What a beautiful gray! I've been grappling with the challenging color of gray for the past week as we're having a painter do our whole apartment. For our large-ish, south-west facing living room, I thought we could handle quite a blue-toned gray, and so we first tried Benjamin Moore "Stonington Gray"; but it looked bleak when it was done, even though it looks whispery soft on the chip. Yesterday we repainted in Benjamin Moore "Gray Owl," which I'm happy with and would recommend; and, for the bedroom, Benjamin Moore "Light Pewter," which is a gorgeous gray-putty color (off of a brown page, as Mark mentions.)

Advice for anyone interested in "true" grays: try green-based grays, and brown-based grays, even if you're trying to avoid the look of taupe. Perhaps see the current issue of Domino for a cover story which has very beautiful putty colors on the wall... My other learning from this experience is that in the future I will be more likely to choose one of the top two colors on the strip if I'm looking for a subtle color, as even those are far from off-white, though they tend to look bland and colorless on paper.

Thanks again. Hooray for ColorTherapy posts!

I really like the juxtaposition of that hutch with the more traditional wall sconce. and the orange of the chair (echoed in the hutch) vs. the sage green of the other chair. very nice.

I love the look of the Silver Fox paired with the vibrant furniture in that room. Can't wait to see the rest of the house!

Phoebe, thanks for the advice about greys. I'm planning to paint my living room a light grey, but am having trouble judging the colors from the chips. The October Domino features a West Village apartment with a nice-looking, standard grey. According to the article, it's Sherwin-Williams Spacious Gray (SW-1009). If anyone else has advice about good greys, please keep it coming.

Talking about color , I am looking for a blue that resembles cobalt blue - but behr or glidden at home depot does not have it. Basically I am looking that will make one feel that you are on the beach - that bright blue sky. My other colors are brown, yellow, olive green couch, splashes of red and orange.

Please help because I feel helpless

I'm so glad to see the Silver Fox! I just ordered the paint from Benjamin Moore (Eco-spec zero VOC has to be special ordered in CT). I tried a sample for our guest room that has dark wood floors and I am hoping it will look just like this! I chose it because it looks like a warm gray which is the exact (modern) color I was going for. This picture confirmed for me that is is the right choice. Bravo!

Cobalt blue and Sky blue are completely different.

Try Benjamin Moore Cayman Blue or Costa Rica Blue.

I'm the only crazed responder so far, but I cannot STAND it that a Color Therapy post has ONE PICTURE!

Mark, if you mention how beautifully the Italian gilt-framed mirror looks in the very same room, please show it!

I am having a fit.

If you want to see Silver Fox used in a great Brooklyn house renovation, check out this site:

The yellow/orange chair-- I have two of those in grass green that I picked up at a yard sale. Anyone know if they have a name?

I painted my living room and guest room Silver Fox last summer and LOVE it. It definitely changes even more than most colors with the light, taking on more taupe or lavender tones during certain times of day. There are a quite a few photos of the rooms in my flickr set here:

We just painted our dining room Silver Fox and I love it.

I never would have recognized it from this picture, though! In our dining room it looks much darker and more purple-brown.

It does change with the light, but in our dining room it never looks as light or as blue/green-gray as it does in this picture.

I painted my bedroom with Silver Fox several months ago. The photo you use does not reflect the extraordinary complexity of this color. I have two windows and several nooks and crannies in my room and this color changes everywhere all day and night. I love it. I use mostly white accents in trim, frames, lamps, etc. with the recycled douglas fir bed from Viva Terra, small accents of light limey-yellow and turquoise.
